Toothpaste w/ Fluoride
At what age did you start giving your child toothpaste with fluoride? My dd will be 3 in a few months. I just feel like the training toothpaste she uses doesn't work that well. It's a gel kind. I think a paste will work better. Not sure if she was too young for the fluoride yet? TIA

my dentist says once they can spit and rinse well they can use it. my dd is almost 3 but since she isnt that great at it, we dont use it yet

at least by 3 (she is 4 now) maybe earlier but DD def. knows to spit it out and not swallow it. I tell her she better not swallow it or she will get sick. I am sure she swallows a little but she def. spits 99% of it out. she uses mouth wash too.
DS is using the training one so she begs me to use that one and I will let her once in a while but she def swallows that one

same for us. We had Santa bring him big boy toothpaste and he's been doing really well with it.

I just took DS to the dentist and I was told the recommendations just changed. They said he can have fluoride toothpaste even if he can't spit it out so long it's the size of a grain of rice. However, I don't really feel comfortable with trying to measure a grain of rice sized toothpaste so we're sticking to fluoride free until he can spit it out (we're just starting to work on it now and he just turned 3). But just putting it out there in case you feel comfortable trying it.

I just took my almost 3 year old to the dentist. She suggested 1xday at night to use fluoride toothpaste. She suggested Toms from Maine Kids (strawberry flavor) with fluoride. Put the size of a rice kernel on it and I can brush it. She can use her non fluoride one in the morning and at night afterwards if she enjoys 'brushing' herself...
I use baby ganics non fluoride one.
ETA: My dd doesn't spit yet but Im trying to teach her.

MY DS started with such a teeny tiny amount of fluoride toothpaste at 2.5.....mostly because my nephew just went to the dentist for the second time and had 2 cavities and they are often watched together by my mother in law during the daytime (food consumption concerns) and he is only 3..... MY DS spits most of it out and I supplement with fluoride at least 2-3 times a week...cavity free so far!

But at the same time if you don't use it, your child can end up with a lot of cavities. This is something I am struggling with. My DS is 5 and had to have 4 filings and an extraction. We used Tom's all these years bc of what you mentioned. I feel guilty like the problems would have been prevented if I'd used fluoride. Not sure

This isn't true at all. In double blind studies there is no proof it prevents cavities. Please do research.
Additionally I have NEVER EVER had a fluoride treatment or used toothpaste that contains it, neither has my brother. He doesn't have any cavities and I have one that I recently had filled in my early 30's.
My parent's both have some cavities so it isn't like we are freaks of nature and have a super power against it.

I don't use flouride toothpaste. My kids are 6, 5, and almost 2. I don't believe it's all that helpful, and even though my little one can spit, she has an obsession with brushing her teeth, and can find toothpaste anywhere. She moves stools and chairs to reach the toothpaste and brush her teeth, and my older ones can't be trusted to keep it out of her reach. So I don't keep it in the house. None of my kids has any cavities.

Me too. And myself.
And DH uses a Flouride rinse after her brushes at the recommendation of his dentist.
No wonder he is insane.
But we also only eat organic by accident and we LOVE McD's.
So we are screwed anyway....

I swallowed my first fluoride treatment at the dentist when I was 2 and I was NOT supposed to. Of course I puked at McDonald's afterwards according to my parents. Fluoride and McDonald's in one day. I'm still here!

We do not use fluoride toothpaste or rinses or water or anything with fluoride. DS just turned 10 and has no cavities.

Me too. Even the flouride vits as a kid! 
I mean I can't say I am 100% normal or anything.... but no MEDICAL issues!

I worked at rite aid and an old lady screamed at me because she said she bought a no flouride toothpaste but couldn't remember the name of it. I showed her the only toothpaste we had with no flouride and she said that wasn't it. Then she acreamed at me and bought a tube of Colgate.

I can't! I just died!
I hate Toms, I felt like I didn't clean my sons teeth and his breath would smell. Idk  I would say 4 yrs old!
And @july4mrsO - don't beat yourself up. Some people have weak enamel. My nieces who don't eat candy and brush their teeth twice a day are more susceptible to cavities. My sister makes them brush and floss more. Meanwhile my stepson who drank soda at 4 and ate a lot of candy () didn't get his first cavity till he was 13. Go figure!
