Tell me to leave it alone! Please! Teacher advice (teacher responded)

We have a hard backed binder that comes home school everyday for AJ. In it is her graded papers, spelling words on Mondays, her calendar with daily progress (good job, great job, awesome, etc), teacher memos or any other notices.

I didn't check it last night as we were busy packing for a trip.

This morning I opened it up and signed it - As it requires a daily signature - and pull out the papers. Its a newspaper thing they send, a few graded papers, a notice about the lock down yesterday (hour long due to a suicidal individual in the 'area' of her school) and a letter that says AJ is being offered tutoring.

Specifically to Math and place value
It will be Wednesdays 7:05-7:30 (so no school breakfast those days)
It will continue through April or until no longer academically necessary
It was dated Oct 6 Monday
Due TODAY Oct 10!!
She has a 94 in math

Ok so first off.. I'm totally fine with Math tutoring.. hey why not it won't hurt. Odd that the teacher didn't explain why she needs tutoring as her grades don't seem to reflect it but whatever...

Secondly I'm pissed that she send a note so late and expects us to just answer immediately.

So I called the school on my way to work and said I must have missed it (not likely). They suggested I email it to the teacher.

Im tempted to say something in the email like..

Although we check her binder every day with very few exceptions, it seems that this letter dated Oct 6th Monday, was somehow overlooked?

You needed a response today but obviously I didn't have a chance to sign and get it back to you in time. However, please find attached a signed copy.

But is that snarky?

I would focus less on the fact that it is late, who cares if she starts tutoring late, you missed the notice or it was given to you late... but I would question her in the e-mail as to why this was necessary. Say she has a 94 in math and you were under the impression she was doing well and this letter for tutoring didn't state why she needs this... I don't think that is snarky. I would just want to know before I sign it why they want her to have that tutoring.

I agree with above. I wouldn't be concerned with when you got the letter BUT I would be scratching my head as to why my child who is doing well in Math needs tutoring. Of course, tutoring isn't a bad thing but if it's NOT something my child actually needs I don't see the point of going through the hassle of getting her there.

I would speak with the teacher about that specifically and WHY she thinks the tutoring is necessary. I think it's a legitimate question to ask.

Would it matter that I live 2m and 17s from school Chat Icon

We are generally there by 7:05 anyway. We sit with her while she eats breakfast. I leave at 7:25 and hubby leaves after they are walked to class at 7:35

Honestly, if my kid wasn't struggling I don't see the point in making her sit there in tutoring............even if you are there early. If she really isn't struggling she's going to be SO bored. I know my DD would be.

I think you should just let her relax in the morning, enjoy her meal, and get herself ready for school.

My guess is they offer tutoring to anyone. So you got a letter. I wouldn't care of the short notice because with a 94 average I would decline with the option to take the offer later if needed.

Maybe but that is probably unlikely. In the schools I taught in we only offered it to kids who needed it. I know in my DD's school that's also not the case. You ONLY get a letter IF you been identified as needing extra help. If you're doing well you don't get a letter. It's not offered to all children, just those that are truly struggling.

ETA - Maybe the teacher made a mistake and she got it in error.

Re: Tell me to leave it alone! Please! Teacher advice

I would just find out why they suggested tutoring and decide if I wanted to opt out or not. It seems
Very specific so maybe this is one part in Math where she is struggling and the teacher doesn't want it to affect her Math grade going forward. Maybe she hasn't been tested on this part yet.

My son is very bright. However, last year because he didn't know his address and was acting like a jerk during testing when they asked about his shapes the school recommended extra services for math and reading. I was confused because his grades in math were 98. The teacher said this will only help him so I allowed even though I wasn't totally on board. Well he excelled and has a bit of an advantage in first grade, which his Kindergerten teacher said he would. I'm glad I listened to her.

Tell me to leave it alone! Please! Teacher advice

Ok so I sent the form and just asked the teacher if she could explain place value work so we could assist at home. I said as of her 6week progress report we had thought she was on pace so we had not been spending as much extra time on Math as we had reading.

Which is true. Everything that comes home for Math is in the 90s. Lately actually its been 95-100 so I didn't drill her.

Reading tho, every day, spelling words all day randomly "AJ Spell have, him, his, it, was, can, see, play, for, you, me, and, get, ....."

F/U:
Not your fault about the dated tutoring form. I was out one day this week and did not realize AJ's form was stuck on the bottom of a "to be graded stack." No rush on the form. I also knew I could catch you or dad in the morning:). Place value is the work we are doing representing numbers as tens and ones. I have several things In her "still working " pile on the subject and would be the reason you are not seeing them. My Wednesday group is math focused at this time, and I also think she would be a great fit with my other 2 girls personalities in the group. I plan on altering my groups based on need and subject matter of the nine week units. Sorry for the confusing regarding this. If you have any other questions or concerns, please let me know.

FYI I did say that *I* must have overlooked the form and I apologized for the 'delay' in getting it back to her.

I'm confused, are you upset at her response? She didn't blame you and said it was her fault for being out. She took ownership and it seems she rotates the groups based on need. Her response seems fine or am I missing something?

Not in the schools I have been in and that my Mother worked in. Extra help (which is what this is ) was open to all. You can't offer help to jsut a few students

Nope not upset at her response.. just saying what I wrote.

I thanked her immediately.

Originally I was going to not mention the date thing at all, but I did.. and that's how I did it. I was giving context to her reply is all.

Different schools have different policies but of course you can offer extra help solely to the kids struggling, that's who extra help is for. A kid who is on track wouldn't need extra help.

Like I said, both my DDs school and all of the schools I worked in identify who has a need and those are the ones targeted for extra help. Not everyone.

I agree. It sounds like she's really on top of things. She must have noticed your daughter could use a little extra help on that one topic of place value, so she offered tutoring before her grades were affected.
