Advice on when to tell work
I am almost 13W, and would like to tell my boss, but I have my performance and salary review coming up on Dec 15 and am afraid the pregnancy might effect my compensation. I am afraid that they will lower my bonus (which is a big part of my compensation), and I will have no way of proving it is because of the pregnancy. I would have to tell my boss the day after the review since he is then out the next week, and at that point, there will be no hiding the belly. I don't want to be sneaky about it, but I also don't want a lower salary because of it. Of course I would hope that it has no impact, but you never know. Help! Thanks!

If you're concerned they may change the bonus, I would wait to say anything until you get something in writing re: evaluation and bonus.

Re: Advice on when to tell work
Your pregnancy should NOT affect your salary / bonus. I'm pretty sure that has been determined way before they even communicate your numbers to you. Besides that, your bonus is based on your 2010 performance, not 2011. Correct me if I'm wrong.
If it does however, and you CAN prove it, your company can have a major discrimation lawsuit.
Good luck.

Re: Advice on when to tell work
At this point I would just wait until after the review. It's only a few weeks away.
I think the timing of when to tell work is different for all people. There are some many factors which can dictate the best time to tell. For some it's early on and other's it's later. It all depends.
No harm in waiting a few more weeks.
Good Luck on your review.

While this is 100% true... that doesn't mean all companies abide by the rules. Some are fearless when it comes to this stuff.... and it can get hard to be able to PROVE things at times.
So I do agree with you... and in a perfect world, all companies would do the right thing for the sake of doing the right thing... but not all companies operate that way. It's the brutal truth.

I would wait - I have learned that companies are sneaky and find their ways out of giving you what you deserve.

Re: Advice on when to tell work
Thanks everyone. My concerns with waiting are that I will probably be showing by then (I already have to me a small but noticable bump, but people probably think I just ate too much turkey!), and that I will only have one day after the review to tell my boss and I think it might make me look bad if I do it that way.
While you would like to hope that they do the right thing, and that this bonus is for 2010 so the pregnancy shouldn't affect it, one never knows, and like the pp said, it is so hard to prove anything.
