How much does your baby talk??

My son is 11 months old and honestly doesn't say anything... Should I be worried??
He definitely babbles and SCREAMS but won't say mama, dada, baba, nothing. My older son was saying mama, dada, baba, ball and other things by 9 months.

Your baby is still so little! I think my pediatrician looked for only 5-7 words on my DDs 18mo mark and babbling my 1 yr.

Re: How much does your baby talk??

By a year peds really want to hear babbling. All kids are different. At 1 my oldest dd said mama, dada and baba. At 1 my youngest dd had 50-100 words. You really can't compare. As long as your baby is babbling that is really the milestone you need to look for.

How much does your baby talk??

I would definitely not worry. That's normal for that age.

Re: How much does your baby talk??

My son will be 1 on Wednesday and he babble talks a lot. He has been saying mama, dada, and baba for months. Now he's starting to mimic other words he hears. He doesn't say many other words consistently but he has repeated a few things like no, yea, yuck, doc (we were watching Doc McStuffins), and a few other easy words.

Within the past few weeks he's started to try out all new sounds when he babbles. He's putting new sounds together and you can tell he is trying to "talk" to you. He will "say" something and wait for a response and he will sometimes get frustrated if you don't give him a response or understand what he is "saying".

But obviously at this age it's mostly all babble when he "talks" except for a few words here and there. He does understand everything you say to him and he tries really hard to "talk" but that will come in time, he's still young.

My DD was a very early talker, I am curious to see if he will be too.Chat Icon

At dd's 15 month appt they said 6-7 words are normal. She was saying mama dada before 12 months, but I think they say it's normal for a wide range of ages. Just like walking is. I wouldn't worry yet.

How much does your baby talk??

Just check that he understands what you're saying, and see if he can imitate your babble. Enjoy the baby babble! It's so cute... Especially before the word "no" shows up

At 11 months DS said mama, dada, up, baby, hi and uh oh. Two months later, those are still basically the only words DS says, also mommy and daddy. Our ped says that is a lot of words for that age, though, so I wouldn't be concerned.

How much does your baby talk??

My 10.5 month old says mama, dada and is occasionally saying no. She is a nonstop babbler though and right now gaga is her favorite sound.

Re: How much does your baby talk??

every baby is different. My DS is very very verbal but had maybe 2 "words" if anything at 12-13 months. He had a word explosion at 14 months and suddenly had a ton of words and long phrases. I was worried too because a lot of my friends kids were saying a handful of words by 12 mo (doggie, mama, dada, up, hi, etc) and my DS wasnt at all but he has more than caught up. I think peds want to see 8 words by 18 months. I know its hard not to worry but its so early still

Fwiw, my DS who I was worried about not talking at 12-13 mo surprised me at 17 mo with this whopper: "mama take off clothes and get in bathtub with [DS name], please!" Chat Icon give it time Chat Icon

Yeah, I wouldn't worry...all kids are different. My son will be 10 months next week and the other day out of nowhere he started babbling. I think the babbles are adorable...

Same here. I think at 12 months, it was all babble. Except for Mama or Dada. Now at 17 months, DD has a ton of words.

Re: How much does your baby talk??

I would NOT worry at all. Every baby goes at their own pace and also remember they concentrate on one milestone at a time. If your LO isn't "talking," but they are crawling, sitting up, or even pulling themselves up then they are fine. DS1 was a late talker, but he did have some delays. DS2 said "up" and "down" around 10 months, BUT he wasn't crawling yet. He crawled a couple of weeks later and was a late walker (around 18 months), but stopped talking a bit when he was working on those milestones.
Once he was walking he started to talk again and had a new word pretty much everyday from about 18-19 months till a little after 2. Now at 2.5 he doesn't stop talking.
