WWYD - witnessing car seat violation

Just curious what other people would do in this situation b/c I keep thinking about it.

Last weekend I went to a store and pulled into a parking spot. In the spot next to me a woman was putting a child (don't know if it was her own) who had to be about 4 years old into the car. She had him in the front seat (i assumed she was doing something other than actually seating him there). She sits him down, then goes around to the drivers side, gets in, and backs out and pulls away.

So:
-4ish years old
-front seat
-No booster seat
-She did not even put the shoulder belt on him (i could see it and yes, I was staring)
-there was a backseat (it was an older model SUV) which had a carseat in it (i saw when I was getting my DD out of the car)

What gives? I cannot come up with an explanation for this but maybe someone on here can. Also - do you say something? Call the police w/ plate number? MYOB?

I would MYOB.

You don't know a stranger and what they are capable of.

And IMO I worry about myself and my family and let others do as they please.

I MYOB when it comes to strangers. I probably wouldn't have even noticed this.

Oh god, thats a tough one bc the child really is in danger god forbid there is an accident. With that said, I dont know that I would have actually said something. Maybe passive aggressively, like I was talking to myself but loud enough so she could hear. Like, "that doesnt seem safe"

Ooo tough call. No, it's not my business, but I would be concerned for the child- how could you not?

It would be hard for me not to say something, but I'm really not sure what I would do. I guess it depends if I felt ballsy that day.

I wouldn't have said anything for the reasons already stated above.
But it just amazes me that there are people who are walking around functioning on this earth and raising children, no less, that are really that flucking stupid and lacking in any form of common sense or intelligence what so ever!!
Really! In this day and age. To not know that wasn't safe. Or to not care?
God.
It really blows my mind.

Re: WWYD - witnessing car seat violation

I'm usually on board with MOB but for this it's a safety issue. Not sure if I would approach the car but I'd put a call into the cops and let them handle it .

I would MYOB, think the lady was an idiot and pray for the child.

What else can you do? Get into a fight with some random stranger. Call the cops who wont be able to do anything because wouldn't the person have left already?

Nothing you are going to do is going to change what is happening but it just may give you more problems.

Re: WWYD - witnessing car seat violation

If I wasnt too stunned by her stupidity, I would have written down her license plate and called the cops.

But from the way you described it, it doesnt sound like you would have had time to do that or say something to her with how quickly it happened.

I hope someone reports her or she gets pulled over soon

Re: WWYD - witnessing car seat violation

I was so shocked that I didn't do anything but I keep thinking about whether I would have (had I not been so shocked) or should have. I seriously could not believe I was seeing someone do something so absolutely illegal.

Don't confront them, some people take it very personally and situations can escalate quickly. If you see them drive away like that, call the police with the plate # and description, the direction they are heading, and hope and pray that they don't get into an accident.

It is illegal and dangerous.

I wouldn't say anything to stranger, but I'd get the plate number and call 911. I've done it several times

I don't think I could muster up the balls to say anything, but I know I would have a hard time living with myself not doing something at all.
This is such a tough call, and I could see why this is a dilemma you need to vent about with other women. Chat Icon
