Those who had big first bday parties...
We are not having a big party for DS's first bday, but just family alone I know DS is going to get so many toys and stuff. We have been invited to other first bdays, and as mom of an almost 1 year old, I realize there are just only so many toys we can have in the house/yard!
Is it okay to give a check along with a small gift instead of a bigger gift? I personally think it might be more useful to put in the LO's savings, but I was curious what other parent's think. At that age also, I figure they are not going to notice who got them a fund gift vs. money/check.

Absolutely. We had a big 1st bday party for DD, and I can't tell you how many items we got duplicates or even triplets of! So, I definitely appreciated the GCs and checks for sure!
If you want to give a small gift too, you could always get a board book and use that as a proxy for a bday card. I started doing that - cards are so overpriced these days!

i prefer to give $$ as well for first birthdays
the kids dont know what is going on and you also dont know what the kids really need. id rather the parents put it into their savings account and when they some up with something to get them they go buy it instead of having yet another toy laying around the house that their dc wont play with

I did not have a big party but did and still do appreciate the monetary gifts, no matter how big or small. It all goes directly into her savings (and helps with the guilt when we can't always put money in there from our own income on a regular basis). And yeah at age 1 (and even age 2) they don't know the difference.

Those who had big first bday parties...
We had a big party for DD (and a smaller one for DS) and got almost exclusively money. I don't know if that's just how our family and circle are but I always thought that's what you get for 1st bdays.

That is perfectly fine. In fact, a gift card or money for savings was my preference for the exact reason you stated. I also thought clothes were a great gift as well.

I think its a great idea. I just went to a 1st birthday. We gave a little toy and a check. Especially since it was just Christmas he already got soooo many toys.
