Nobody but Traffic Safety does winter hours. Even with that - nobody does evening hours.

That's terrible. So people w/ winter babies get screwed?

car seat installation- when and where
Not to sound ignorant (I am a first time mom) but are DH and I not supposed to just install our own car-seat bases when we get them? I assumed we would get them as gifts at our shower in May and then install at our leisure. Is that not how it works?

You can but it's highly recommended that you get your install checked by a certified tech because they are many times installed incorrectly.

That's what we did. DH has always installed the carseat himself. I never heard of getting it done before LIF.
I'm sure it's great to get it done or at least looked at, but carseats are made to be installed by parents, you don't NEED to have a professional do it.

I think to each his/her own. I honestly never heard of car seat inspections until LIF either but then again, most things baby related I never heard of either.
Personally, I would rather DH and I install the seat ourselves and then bring it to a certified technician to make sure we are doing it correctly b/c from my research on the subject, many people do install it wrong and that may be the difference between a minor and a major injury should there be a car accident.
So is it necessary? No. Is it a good idea, IMO yes. I mean, these places do exist for a reason.

This is what I was planning on doing. Especially since I'll have a winter baby and apparently all those types of places are closed

90 percent of seats are installed wrong - and to be honest yours may be one of them. It never hurts to have them checked. Depending on the car and the seat the installation is not always easy.
