Eggs and MMR?

DD is 10 1/2 months old. Her doctor told us not to feed her eggs until after she receives the MMR vaccine. I know the vaccine contains trace amounts of egg, but his logic is confusing. I haven't found anyone else who was given this instruction by a pediatrician, nor have I been able to find anything on the internet.

Anyone know anything about this?

Are you sure you haven't got it backward? You HAVE to try eggs before the MMR. In fact, my son has an egg allergy and we had to block 90 minutes or something for his 1st dose so we could stay in the office and make sure he wasn't going to react (he didn't). Isn't first dose at 12 mos? That's a long time to wait for eggs anyway. Definitely call back to double-check.

Nope, not backwards. We just had the same conversation for the third time yesterday.

Hmmm...I wonder what his reasoning is? I know my practice is pretty conservative about egg allergies and MMR and flu vaccine...DS is 3 and has never had a flu shot as a result (even though I've read it's perfectly safe). I suppose then, you'll have to do what makes you comfortable. My son had a pretty violent reaction after actually eating eggs, but none to the MMR, so I imagine there's so little actually in there a reaction would be rare...

The MMR has no association with eggs anymore. There used to be years ago, but not anymore. There is no contraindication to the MMR if you have an egg allergy. I'm positive. My DD has an egg allergy. (Interestingly there are 7 doctors at her pediatrician's office. Since her egg allergy was diagnosed, we've seen 4 of them. 1 of them seemed to have no idea about egg allergies and vaccines - she seemed to think that DD couldn't get the flu vaccine ever, and that the MMR would have to be administered by an allergist. The other 3 docs we saw, plus DD's allergist, all said the opposite. It's not like it's an opinion and some people believe one way is best; It seems that the one other doc was just misinformed.)

With the flu vaccine it's a little different. A tiny percentage of people allergic to egg react to the flu vaccine. The first year we gave DD the flu vaccine, we had to do it at her allergist's office and they gave it to her in small doses and we were there for 3 hours. Chat Icon After she was fine, he told us that she would always be fine with the flu vaccine and her ped could give it every year thereafter.

Never heard that and definitely gave eggs before a year. Also gave all vaccines on time without any issues.

This is what I was going to say. I'm pretty certain the flu shot is the only one now possibly contraindicated for those with an egg allergy. The MMR has not been for a few years now.

Re: Eggs and MMR?

I was told to give eggs at 10 months. To try to separate them, but she knew a trace amount of white would be attached to the yolk. I wanted to give flu shot at 12 months, so we wanted to know, plus I have low iron, so we need to eat a lot of eggs.
