BF Moms - is this weaning?

DD is 8.5 months. At our last check up 2.5 weeks ago she didn't gain any weight but grew an inch. She has always been in the 90-95th percentile for weight so this was a concern of mine. Ped was somewhat concerned - suggested blood work. Before I rush to get her blood work, I want to bring her in again for a weight check.

Cue to this past week, where she has maybe been nursing 4-5 min a feeding. Some feedings have been better than others though. I'm a FTWM so she usually gets bottles during the day (anywhere from 25-30oz) and I nurse about 2-3 times a day. I've been off the last few days so I've been nursing more and always on the weekend. She also gets 3 meals of baby food a day.

Could she be starting to wean? She did just start crawling so maybe that is why she's nursing less (major milestone?) I'm soo not ready for her to wean!!

If you're still reading this then thank you!!!

It's just a distractable time. I doubt she's weaning. Try to offer nursing more frequently, and nurse In a quiet dark room instead of someplace with lots of distractions.

The. I weight gain thing is likely normal, find out which growth chart your ped is using. Breast fed babies naturally thin out after 6 months, and the old cdc growth curves do not take this into account, you want them to use the who growth curve which is based on breastfed babies.

Also if she just started crawling, she's likely burning more calories and just needs time for her appetite and your supply to adjust.

Thanks, I didn't realize they are different growth charts! So good to know!

She is definitely easily distractable - even the xmas lights distract her!

Thanks for the advice!!

Re: BF Moms - is this weaning?

She sounds quite healthy in the 90th percentile and is probably getting lots of and nutrition through breastmilk and food! She is probably just tapering off a bit since she is moving now and her appetite may be changing. My daughter gained about 1lb per month or so 2.5 weeks with no gain isn't that bad. However I know every baby is different and they look at the curve and decide what's normal based on her past weight gain. I think as long as she isn't losing I would be worried. I personally wouldn't put her through any tests just yet.

Also are you pumping while away? Has your supply dipped? Even if it has a bit that is normal!!! My supply went down the more my DD ate of real people food.

Sounds like she might just be ready for more food, and less milk. That's very typical around this age.

I agree with all of this. I wouldn't think she's weaning and I wouldn't be too concerned with lack of weight gain. Could be all the calories she's burning from starting to crawl along with wanting to get down and get moving rather than spend a long time nursing. Definitely try to nurse in a quiet, boring place so to minimize distractions. Like you said, I would give her a little time and see if she starts to gain. It could also just be that she's leveling off and going to settle into a new place on the charts.

Weaning is.a.slow gradual process, but this doesn't sound like it. Between her milestones shes currently achieving, eating 3 meals/day and her age with causes distractibility, she is nursing less. Try to nurse in a quiet dark room and make sure she is nursing enough vs eating solids. Also at this stage she may be becoming amore efficient nurse so she doesn't need to be on there as long.

Thank you everyone. For the last day I was making sure she was eating in a dark boring place. Well as boring as can be. lol. I also read to give her something to hold on to while she eats, although I thought that would be counter productive - its been working.

I too think that she's becoming more efficient at nursing. We'll see when I bring her back to the dr. She's back with the nanny now so I'll see how many oz she drinks now that I'm back at work (Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon )
