BF Moms - How do you know when your DC is self weaning?

I plan to BF until at least a year, but I am kind of nervous about weaning him so I want him to do it himself. How do I know when he's done? Would he completely refuse it? TIA!

The way I approached it was, at around 14 months, I decided to take that "don't offer, don't refuse" approach. I had recently found out I was pregnant and I knew I didn't want to do tandem nursing. I also hoped that my son would wean far enough in advance of the new baby being born that it wouldn't cause any jealousy issues or anything when he saw the baby nursing. But I felt strongly that I did not want to force him to wean before he was ready. So by taking this approach, it left it totally up to him. I stopped offering it to him, but if he "asked" for it (pulling at my shirt, etc.) I would nurse him. For about a week, he was nursing when he woke up and at bedtime. He hung on to the bedtime nursing for another 3 weeks or so and then just stopped asking for it. Another thing I started doing at the same time was bringing a sippy of milk with us when we read books during our bedtime routine. I wanted him to know that milk was an alternative to nursing if he wanted it. One night, about 3 weeks after the last time he nursed, he randomly wanted to one night at bedtime. So I allowed him to, but of course, by that point, I had virtually no supply. So he sucked a little bit, got a confused look on his face, and then tried the other breast. I offered him the sippy and he went back and forth between that and my breast maybe 2 or 3 times and then just sucked down that sippy like there was no tomorrow and never looked back. I think that was a huge moment for him because he realized he could have all the milk he wanted, but couldn't get much breastmilk anymore. At almost 20 months, he still sucks down that bedtime sippy
