How do you introduce a potentially allergenic food?

How do you introduce a real new food? The pediatrician OK'd fish. We go fishing all summer and I have ocean-caught fluke and sea bass I'd like to try with the girls.

I am so scared they're going to go into shock or their throat will close up. What do I do if this happens immediately?
What if they break out into hives and then it happens?

They probably will be fine. I'm just being a little paranoid because of the number of kids who have food allergies today......

I felt the same way! I actually contemplated giving peanuts while sitting in a hospital parking lot!

But we just introduced them with Benadryl nearby. My doctor said that typically, a first introduction of an allergic food would likely be hives, not worst case scenario. And we did it when we knew the ped office was open (ie not on a Sunday night!).

Good luck.

I made sure I was home and able to pay full attention to ds for a number of hours. I purchased a bottle of benadryl and fed him "possibly allergic" food.

if they have a severe reaction just dial 911. Chances are they won't and its shellfish that more people have reactions too so you kinda just have to go for it.

I'd just do it during the day, not before bedtime.

We haven't done peanuts, but plan to when we are both around to watch them like hawks just in case. And you have to watch for a few times it is introduced because they may not react badly for first time or 2.

i tried almond milk in the morning. dd got hives within a few minutes. i wish i had benadryl but i didnt. they went away after 2 hours.

if things had gotten more serious obviously i would have called 911. i plan on doing allergy testing for the both of them before introducing anything else.
