When do you introduce cereal and baby food?
DD is 4 1/2 months old and my ped has not mentioned anything yet. Just wondering when you would normally introduce other things besides formula into the baby's diet.

Re: When do you introduce cereal and baby food?
Most of my Mom friends and I introduced cereal at 4 months and purees at 5 or 6 months. The books will tell you to do it between 4-6 months.

Re: When do you introduce cereal and baby food?
I think overall there's a push to wait later nowadays. My 1st DD (who's almost 6 now)we started at 5mths, 2nd DD at 6mths.

When do you introduce cereal and baby food?
The AAP recommendation is 6 months. There is really no reason to start before then.

Re: When do you introduce cereal and baby food?
we started cereal around 3.5 months- too soon. dd was very gassy and got constipated. ped said there really was no nutritional value anyway so we stopped and never went back to it. at 4.5 months we began on fruits and veggies and dd is loving them.

Re: When do you introduce cereal and baby food?
If the baby is EBF, they tell you to wait til 6 months. Having said that-- I started a few weeks early with both of my kids-- like 5.5 months. Start with cereal til they get hang of eating.

Re: When do you introduce cereal and baby food?
We started oatmeal, peaches and pears at 4 months. Most recommendations are between 4-6 months, leaning towards the 6 months though. I would have liked to wait until 5 months, but she has constipation issues and the pediatrician said that the pears and peachces would help with that. SO far she eats very little of them, so I haven't seen much of a difference. We probably could have waited until 5 months!

The AAP recommendation is 6 months. There is really no reason to start before then.
There is: allergies.
Kids who start food at 4 months versus 6 have fewer allergies.
Kids who start at 6 months versus 4 have less obesity.
All of the above is supported by studies (every kid is individual).
My ped feels STRONGLY that kids should start at 4 months, but I could understand the flip side too.

That's interesting. By chance do you have any links to articles about the studies on allergies? I read a while ago that that was actually a myth. But i havent read up on it in a while, so I'd be curious to see the studies.
