Re: delivering at 33 weeks

Crashing but I had triplets at 34 weeks and one year later they are fine! They were in the nicu 12, 15 and 18 days. They were in nursery g (the "feeder and grower" nursery for babies wo issues aside from bottle feeding) by day 3. The odds are overwhelming that this baby will be just fine! "Moderate" preterm Babies born before 35 weeks usually do not have the "suck swallow breathe" reflex yet so that is what usually accounts for the nicu stay - they have to learn how to eat and breathe at the same time. Trust me - us triplet moms pray to make it to 33 weeks! What hospital is she at? The nicu at nsuh is awesome :) good luck to her and her baby.

delivering at 33 weeks

I don't personally have experience with a premie but a friend of mine delivered by emergency c-section at 27 weeks and her son is doing AMAZING now. He has been in the NICU for 50 days. He started at 1lb 4oz and went down to 1lb 2oz. Their goal was to hit 3lbs by June 1st and they hit their goal about 5 days early.

Modern technology is amazing and I'm sure her baby will be just fine. She might have to leave him/her at the NICU until he/she is stable enough to go home but she just has to remind herself that it's for the best health of her son/daughter. Good luck and your friend and her family are in my prayers!

I gave birth to my 3rd at 33 weeks. I had a slew of issues and she had stopped growing at 28weeks. She weighed 3lbs and was 15 inches. Spent 31 days in the NICU.

She just turned 4 on Tuesday and is freakishly tall, slightly under weight and is perfect!

The NICU can be super stressful. Just be there for your friend. I had 2 kids at home to deal with as well. My friends brough food, and helped babysitting. I was so appreciative for all the support because we were just exhausted!

Good luck to your friend!

delivering at 33 weeks

I delivered DS at 28 weeks. He spent 7 weeks in the NICU. This was not planned it just happened - don't know why I went into labor. He was born at 2 lbs 14oz and at 20 months he weighs in at 28 lbs and 33 inches tall. NICU staff is awesome ( we were at stony brook).

I will agree with pp to just be there for your friend. Having a baby in the NICU is super stressful esp if it is an extended stay. Going home without the baby is really hard. More than anything I just wanted people to talk to. I found that people in general did not really know how to talk to me and DH about DS.

Re: delivering at 33 weeks

I did, with my oldest.

32 weeks, 5 days.

She stayed in the nicu form5 weeks.

She was 4 pounds, 14 ounces, pretty big for a preemie. She had to learn how to,suck, swallow, breathe when she ate.

Fm me with any questions, good luck to your friend.

i did, 33w1d. 26 days in the NICU, no issues just weight gain and maintain her temps. she was IUGR and weighed 3lbs 8oz. when we left the hospital she was 4lbs 10oz. shes 2 years old now and still below the curve for weight but otherwise perfect and ahead of her age in every way. good luck to her.

Crashing.

My son was born at 30w4d. Spent just about 6 weeks in NICU (39 days!)

Be there for her. Cook her dinner. Let her vent and however she handles this is the "right" way. Leaving DS in the NICU was one of the hardest things I ever did.

Many prayers for your friend and her baby! Chat Icon

Re: delivering at 33 weeks

baby will likely be okay - i agree with other posters. i personally did not want visitors during nicu days - see what your friend needs/ wants and go from there .. i agree food and babysitting (if other kids) would be helpful if she wants it / needs it
nicu at winthrop was good - hardest part is leaving baby there ... Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

My son was born at exactly 33 weeks and spent 2 weeks in the NICU. He had some breathing and feeding issues but overall did really well. Going home without him was the absolute hardest thing I've ever had to do. He's 3 years old now and in the 99 %ile for height and weight Chat Icon

My sister delivered my nephew at 33 weeks via emergency C-section. He was 5 pounds when he was born, and spent 10 days in the NICU. He is now 20 months and is just like Bam Bam.
I hope everything works out well with your friend and her LO.

Re: delivering at 33 weeks

Crashing-I delivered Ds at 30w6d due to Pre-e. Ds was in the hospital about 2 months but that was for other reasons. He was breathing on his own and was never intubated, just need a CPAP and oxygen here and there. He is perfectly healthy now. My cousin delivered twins at 33 weeks and they only stayed a week in the NICU. they were breathing on their own and never needed oxygen. They began feeding right away. It all depends on the baby! Good luck to your friend!

Re: delivering at 33 weeks

Crashing, delivered my.youngest at 33w5d & he was big 5lbs 3oz & stayed 4 weeks. Im shocked they told your friend only 2 week NICU stay. At that stage they need to learn to suck, swallow & breathe.

The NICU stay can be stressful bc there are ups & downs.
