Fence issue with neighbors...
So this is bothering me and I just want some opinions...it is really long, sorry! We live on a corner lot and our neighbors behind us have their front yard adjacent to our backyard/side yard...the people we bought our house from never fenced in that side, thought most people in our neighborhood have fenced in their side yards as well (about 10 have the same situation as us)...my husband had to run new fencing in our backyard because our neighbor didn't have a fence and we could walk into his backyard and pool, so we decided to redo all the fencing and fence in our side yard. Our neighbor expressed how unhappy he is with us fencing in our side yard because he now has to look at a fence, when for the past 20 years, he has looked across our open yard...we desperately need the space as our backyard is small and our other side yard isn't cutting it for us. I feel for him, as I would be upset too with the change, but the way he put it, it is like we are doing something wrong. We have followed our survey and are within our town code to put up a fence. We thought about compromising with a shorter fence, but it sort of defeats the purpose for us (to keep our kids safe) and the wife came out and sort of sounded as if she was threatening that something would happen to our fence...so we are sticking with what we want to do. Any opinions?

100% do what you planned just make sure you have permits and it meets yourmtowns regulations so they cant call in a complaint.
We also live on a corner. Our side yard is fenced in with 4 foot picket (since its all we were allowed (although drive around and so many houses have 6 foot) but we will be putting tall bushes.
Eta how is his pool not fenced in? Thats dangerous

Maybe you should express to them how they dont meet town code if they have a pool and NO fence. You have children you want to keep safe and if you are within your rights, then tell them THAT.

If they were nice about it, I might explain why you were putting the fence up, but since they are being pretty bitchy about it, I wouldn't offer any explanation. You are entitled to do what you want, as long as its within code, so I wouldn't worry about it. They have to understand that things change and you are entitled to do what you want on YOUR property.

Re: Fence issue with neighbors...
We are totally within the code to do a 6 foot because it is considered our side yard and we can go as far forward as our forward foundation. We are having dig safe come and mark us out this week to make sure nothing runs thought, thought we pretty much know we are fine. I think it's more the change they don't like, and I agree, I would dislike it too, but it's not their choice, like it's not our choice what our neighbors choose to do. I think they felt because we are young, and they are much older than us, that they could tell us what to do.

Fence issue with neighbors...
we had a problem when we bought our house- there was an old fence on the property not sufficient for a pool in term of safety. Our house abuts a nature preserve - the neighbor on the other side of the nature preserve said we took down a town fence and called the town on us. we had our survey and my dad with his survey equipment proved it.
they complained that we were putting up an ugly white fence and that is all they would see but the have no say in it is what we told them - if it is on your property they can't touch it and if they do harm to the fence you can sue them trespassing and for any damage tot he property. we really expected to see one side of our fence green. But most people are not stupid

we had a horrible issue with our neighbor when we just put our fence, but it's our property, and we pay the taxes for it, not them-we even put it on our side of the property, not on the property line

Exactly. If it were me, after I was nice to them and they me a threathing attitude I would likely say NOTHING, do what I planned and let them be pissed.

Re: Fence issue with neighbors...
It is what it is.
I know my ILs were upset when their neighbor (also corner lot) put up a fence because it can be dangerous and obstruct their view when they try to go out of their driveway, but in the end the homeowner is well within their rights to do what they want to do if it's not breaking code.

Let them know that if your children were to get into their yard without a fence, you'd be the one suing them. You are doing this for the protection of your children, however if they would like you to contact the town to let them know that their pool isn't secure, you can do that with no problem.
Since the fence is yours, and on YOUR property, you can also let the wife know that if they damage the fence, you'll be calling the cops for destruction of property.

You already told them as a courtesy...make sure you're within your property limits and follow town code and let them deal. Nothing else, it's not your problem anymore!

And in addition, I would tell them if they wanted control over hte property, they should have bought it themselves. You have every right to put up a fence, whether they have a pool or not...as long as you follow code.

Fence issue with neighbors...
We had a similar situation with a neighbor...
It's your home, you are within code, what's the problem?
Remind them that good fences make good neighbors!

REPORT THE DOUCHE for not having a FENCE witha pool.
Thast what I would do.
n reality. Too bad so sad. You are in your rights to do so.
Mabe get them a bottle of wine and sit with them and tell you are VERY sorry, but you feel you need to have your space spelled out.

I'm not saying that you should give an inch, but keep in mind you do have to live next to him until either you move or he does... so however you communicate it, make sure you do it as nicely as possible.
I would basically tell him you understand his position on the fencing etc etc, but you really need to take advantage of your property and need this.
if he pushes anymore you can bring up the pool etc, how it should be fenced too... However, maybe its just me, I probably wouldn't call it in unless its still going to be an issue once your fence is up, why start a war when it will be remedied.

Re: Fence issue with neighbors...
I'm trying to keep things amicable, since we will be neighbors until one of us moves...we fenced in our yard, so his pool is now fenced! We are still putting up the fence, and hope that they can just get over it! We have cameras outside our house, so if they ever tried to pull anything, they would get caught! We're just waiting for Dig Safe to come and make sure we're good with utilities and for the town code person to call us back and make sure we are completely up to code on the fence.

If he doesn't like looking at your fence, he's welcome to plant trees IMO.

That's what my family has said...buy mature bushes and plant them.
