Neighbors and Fence issue...
One side of my yard, borders 2 of my neighbors houses. I'm very good friends with both of them. The fence was put up years ago by they guy who owned both of their houses at the time. Its a typical stockade fence, that was installed horribly (crooked, uneven etc) with the ugly side facing our yard. Both neighbors have acknowledged how ugly it is. However, neither of them can really see it because of the trees and bushes on their side of the fence. Over the past year I have mentioned repeatedly, that we want to replace it. Its really starting to bother me that neither of them have even offered to help pay for it.
Am I wrong to expect them to offer $ towards it? (financially it wouldn't be a problem for either family.)

Re: Neighbors and Fence issue...
Is it considered your fence or your neighbor's? Why did the guy who owned their house put a fence up with the ugly side facing you?
If it is on your property and considered yours, I would not ask them for anything.
We have to replace our ugly fence this year too but have to apply for a variance because we are changing it to PVC. Such a pain.

Re: Neighbors and Fence issue...
Fences are a weird thing. One of our neighbors didn't offer a cent when we replaced the side that borders theirs, but the other neighbor was tripping over themselves to split the cost with us.
If they offer it's a wonderful thing, but if they don't there is nothing you can do about it if it's your fence.

Re: Neighbors and Fence issue...
We had a similar situation with 4 neighbors because each kind of bordered our property. One family asked if they could chip in because we basically fenced the back of their property (we declined). The other family, waited until the next summer and after we fenced the back of their property, they finished fencing in the sides of their yard.
The other neighbor was a single mom and I wouldn't dream of asking her. The other couple was moving and just didn't care.
So we fenced our entire property and gave our neighbors a nice fence. It is what is.

Re: Neighbors and Fence issue...
To me, if it is is your fence, it is your cost.
I plan on putting up a fence this year and I wouldn't expect anyone to chip in (wouldn't take $ if they did).
In my case, the neighbors have been there for decades and never fenced.. I just moved in. If I choose to put up a fence when they were fine without all those years, wouldn't dream of asking. Plus I get to pick what kind I want without answering to anyone.

Re: Neighbors and Fence issue...
we asked our neighbor if we could take the little remaining of the wood fence (there was a 20 ft section where it was gone and our yard was really 1 big yard), we told him we were doing PVC, he was happy... he didn't offer to pay anything. If you want the fence, you pretty much have to pay for it, you are lucky if they offer to pay, but you can't expect it.

Re: Neighbors and Fence issue...
When we moved in, there was a hideous, rusty chain link fence on two sides. The back one belonged to the people behind us, and no one was sure who the side one belonged to. We knew we wanted PVC all around, so when it was time the fence company offered to take out the chain link completely. We didn't ask the people in the back, because it was their fence so we built ours in front of theirs (and let them know because there's a little room behind ours because of a tree in the way, but we put in a gate so it doesn't get overgrown between the two).
With the people on the side, we asked if they wanted the chain link removed since we didn't want what was possibly our fence becoming their eyesore. They happily accepted, but we never wanted or expected a penny from them. This was our upgrade, and if they benefit from it, so be it. We wanted and needed the fence right away, and they didn't. If they end up going with PVC on their remaining 3 sides than good for them!
It's weird to me that the ugly side is facing you--I think many towns prohibit that and the nice side is supposed to face the neighbors. Are you certain it belongs to them?

I have to say, I really hate the whole have the neighbors help pay for the fence topic. If its YOUR fence, on YOUR property, why on earth would anyone think their neighbors would help pay for it? Its your fence?

I think if you want it done so bad and it doesn't phase them in the least then its all on you. if it makes your property look better then its worth it in the long run!

Re: Neighbors and Fence issue...
I can understand your concerns. I am very friendly with both of my neighbors. I "share" a fence with each of them. That being said, they have both replaced their fences, on three sides. For whatever reason they always leave the fence along my property for me to deal with. I can never understand why. I am by far the poorest of the three of us! But what can I do? I can't ask them to pay for it. If I want it replaced then I just have to pay.

Re: Neighbors and Fence issue...
we just replaced our old stockade fence even though our neighbors use it as their fence as well. we did not ask them for any money nor did they offer to contribute a part of the cost once it was put up. However since it was our fence we feel like we couldn't ask them for $. It is what it is i guess!..

Is this their fence that you offered to split the cost of replacing? If so and they didn't take you up on it, there really isn't anything you can do. They only thing you can do it put up your own fence along the old one.
If it's your fence, I would just replace it. If they offer you anything for it, that would be great. But don't expect it.

ITA. And I've got to be honest, if I was one of them, and couldn't see the fence due to trees, then I really wouldn't care enough to spend money to replace something that I can't see.

if they're not ready or willing to replace it then unfortunately it is your financial responsibility and not theirs.

Based upon this part, I don't think you should expect them to pay for anything.

DH and I are putting up a PVC fence and would never dare to ask our neighbors to pay for it. if they wanted it they would have paid for it already! one of them has the same ugly fence you are talking about

If you want a fence, you pay for it.
I am putting up trees to screen me from my neighbors, I am not asking them to chip in.
I don't understand why you think they should chip in if YOU want it done.

Exactly. If you don't like how it looks then put one up on your side to hide the ugliness. I actually find it appalling that you even asked them to replace their fence.

You said yourself that "neither of them can really see it because of the trees and bushes on their side of the fence" so why on earth would they even be remotely interested in changing something they can barely see.
I don't really see why you are bothered that neither has offered to help pay for what will be your fence -you want a new fence, not them.
