I would put safety knobs on. I've done that myself and I don't think I would've noticed it right away if I hadn't been Standing right there.

I would put those things on the stove knobs and per cut the food.

I don't have a nanny nor any clue how hard it is to find someone that you like (and that your kids like)... that being said, I think this is a good opportunity for you and DH to discuss what exactly it would take for you to say "ok she's gone". Is it the stove thing one more time? Is it a different incident, but still dangerous? I think at the very least, you can speak to her, explain why there is an issue, and ask HER what she will be doing personally to prevent such incidents again.

Go with your gut, it rarely is wrong...

I am usually VERY laid back about things related to nannies making innocent mistakes like we all make...but...this is different. It terrifies me actually. GOD FORBID a match was lit while that gas was leaking...my uncle works in construction and had this happen...an old lady left her gas on by mistake and went to light a candle and the whole place went on fire. Awful.

Sorry, it would just make me too nervous. I feel like when someone is in charge of someone elses children they NEED to be aware of something like that. One time is one thing...but three??? Nope!

I understand your kids love her but the fact of the matter is you can't trust her. Period.

At first I thought I'd give her a second chance and install safety locks. But given someone has to push in and turn, someone is playing with that stove and potential causing a fatal situation.

I'd install the safety locks (in case the 2 year old can reach) and I'd start looking for a new nanny. I consider myself pretty laid back when it comes to childcare. Once, I could let slide. 2 times is extremely concerning. The 3rd time, you need to take action.

Some people give nannies severance as a courtesy. I would probably let her know a week in advance & pay her a week.

Thank you everyone for your responses! I think I am putting in notice at the end of this week. I've been with the firm for 5 years so I am slightly nervous but excited!!!

You know I can see this happen by accident once or twice , but more than that and I would let the nanny go .
It actually happened to DH and I , one time I brushed against the stove and didn't realize I turned gas on, but thank god I was still standing there 5min later and I smelled it so I turned it off, then one time DH turned off the gas on the stove but I guess he didn't turn the knob all the way and it was still coming out, my DD realized it was on when she walked by, she said it smells weird, so I checked and turned it off, but since then we have been so careful, I actually just last week ordered the stove knob covers from amazon , haven't put them on yet, but will this weekend, maybe you can try it and see?
I do have to share a crazy story , not saying this is what your nanny was trying to do (obviously, because there were other people there) but just kind of keep in mind maybe : my sister lives in Greece , one day she was sitting in a park having lunch , she overheard 2 nannies talking and one of them said that the only way she could put the kids (she was watching) to sleep was by turning gas on just for a min or so and let the kids breath the air " it makes kids very drowsy and makes it easy to get them take naps." ...My sister actually got the nannies name and info and called the cops on her, she also contacted the family the nanny worked for, turned out she was the family nanny for 5+ yrs
Anyway, I would have a talk with the nanny and ask her exactly how this keeps happening and why she is not being more careful .
