Norwegian Gem - The Good, the Bad & the Ugly.

So finally after I dont even know how many years at this point Chat Icon we booked a cruise! With so much back & forth with trying to figure out dates, finances and whatever, we decided the best value for us, and time we could go would be the end of Aug. Just in time to celebrate my sons 5th birthday & our 7 year anniversary.

So... We are leaving from NY on the NCL Gem to the Bahamas. Not excited about the port, but we will be visiting the Atlantis so it wont be that bad. Has anyone taken this cruise? Please share the lowdown, especially if you travelled with a small child. We are bring our son (5) and daughter (2).

Thanks so much!

I have done that ship and itinerary. The ship itself is very nice. The food in the main dining room wasn't too impressive, so we stuck with specialty restaurants- which for us was worth the added expense. The shows were pretty good. I believe NCL has changed their camp age to 3. So just be prepared to have no breaks. Your older one will probably enjoy some camp activities (they have lots of cool things planned for them) and your little one will be allowed in the splash pool with a swim diaper- at least they were on our cruise. I would skip any theme parks in Orlando, it just doesn't give you enough time to be worth it. If your kids like the beach, just go to Cocoa Beach for the day. It is definitely not the nicest beach, but it's ok with some bars and restaurants close by. Atlantis is cool for the day, but I don't think you're allowed to use the pools there. We never made it on to their private island because the water was too choppy, but I've heard it's a nice day.

Thanks!

I'm on the fence with the theme park idea. I agree with you. We arrive in Cape Canaveral at 12pm, so I feel like everything will be so rushed that day. I heard that Sea World is a better option since its a bit closer.

If you're going to bother with a park, then Seaworld is probably your best option. I actually think Seaworld is awesome even though most people here seem to skip it.

Re: Norwegian Gem - The Good, the Bad & the Ugly.

Search for my name on here - I wrote a review of this exact ship and destinations. I would NOT do Disney. It is way to expensive, You get maybe 5 rides in and it is not worth it. As for the Atlantis - go but read my review first to know what to expect. The pool on the ship is not great, but the kids slide is a lot of fun. Also be prepared to eat in the pay restaurants. Now I will say we have not been on a cruise since this trip 2 years ago and many members of my family were turned off to NCL by our experiences on this particular trip. I truly hope you have a better time than we did. Oh and do not get rooms under the basketball court.
