Holbrook and Holtsville--good, bad, ugly?

We just started looking in the Holbrook/Holtsville area. They are all in the Sachem school district.

Are there any differences between the two towns? Do you recommend one over the other? Are there any areas to avoid (other than the obvious of neighboring the airport or train tracks?). House prices seem similar in the two towns.

We live in Holbrook and we love it here.

We don't own, so I can't give you any scoop on taxes or anything. But we have found it to be a nice little town and we enjoy living here.

Out of the two - I prefer Holbrook. No real major reason why. I just like Holbrook better and feel it's closer to more things like shooping, etc.

Holbrook is a great place that has really grown over the years. the area is divided by the tracks. south is in Islip and north is in Brookhaven so the tax base will be different. the area west of main street is older. some of the streets are very narrow and if you have more than one car it can be a challenge. i'd stay away from the areas closest to sunrise highway. on the same streets you can have industrial buildings and residential housing. it is in the sachem school district which is an o.k. district. outside of what i mentioned there are more pros than cons living here. i love it here.Chat Icon

same for me!

My sister lives in Holtsville and she loves it there.

Both are about the same.

We live in the Town of Islip part, are about 2 miles from the Ronkonkoma train station and near enough to the airport to make it very convienent yet not bothered by the plane noise

I think both areas are nice. Close to transportation, it's a central LI location. And Sachem is a pretty good district. It's just a large one but not bad.
