Am I the only one that is bothered by this?

Does anyone else have family members say things like "You're not using bumpers?!" or "You don't plan on putting cereal in their bottle?!" or "You don't wake him to eat?!". These are just some of the things get from family members that had kids like over 20 years ago. At first it just went in one ear and out the other, but now it's making me crazy. It's like a broken record.

Yes but people are used to what they are used to. Babies haven't changed, it's the research that has so they just aren't going to know.

It does get annoying. When my parents were here for the holidays they kept trying to keep DD awake all day. I kept telling them no, when she naps well she sleeps better overall so please don't keep her up!!! It was a daily fight!

yes!!! I can totally relate. I heard it nonstop when I took away dd's bottle at 13 months, meanwhile she hasn't lookes for it. I hear it because I still have dd rearward facing at nearly 17 months...yet she isnt really cramped. Now I hear with ds (2 weeks) that I should give up bfing because bm isn't enough for him. Opinions are like a**holes....everyone has one and I tune them out as often as possible

It is annoying I always just cite my doctor and if they keep at it I say firmly, okay maybe rudely Chat Icon , that I listen to the instruction of the peditrician not someone who had one or two kids 30 yrs ago.

No!! My MIL makes me nuts sometimes.

I repeatedly state, "Your son and I discussed this and made the parenting decision together to XXXX". I usually have to say it 2-3 times but she eventually gets the hint and then USUALLY doesn't bring it up again.

Yup all the time. My mom and MIL used to this too.. and I'm like "things have changed" line all the time. They're you "google" too much.. but they know I won't budge if my mind is made up and they've stopped. But when you have someone your age, citing their doc allows them to "XYZ" so why can't you do it as well.. that gets under my skin!

The bumpers thing caused a huge blowout with my ILs. Bottom line is it's your kid and you are going to do things your way. You have to find a way to let it go in one ear and out the other.

Yes!!! I am someone who really cares what other people think too!! Don't ask me why. My responses are now:
Well, you and Dad also were allowed to drink and drive in the car with us and smoke with us in the car. Should I do that too? Grandma didn't have seat belts in the car, should I not use seat belts since we were fine? I dealt with extensive drama from my family about how breastfeeding wasn't best or it wasn't enough. I breastfed for the whole year anyways and never listened but I always wished I had the family who supported my choices.
Honestly, research is a win lose with our parents. I feel as though our parents will always say, well you were fine...Vaccination ingredients have changed, research is changing on the safety of car seats, cancer and developmental delays are at all time highs. I feel the only thing we can do is really educated ourselves and know we are doing what WE think is best...It really bothers me since I care so much what other people think :(

I usually just say "yes, things have changed a lot in 30 years. They have this new thing called the internet now too. Have you hard of it"?

Seriously, things even changed from 8 years ago when my nephew was born.

My mil had to be told 2000 times not to use blankets on my nb (and was even supplied with sleep sacks). It blows my mind that you could tell someone that research shows that something can cause DEATH and that they could still argue for it just because they did it 25 years ago.

Yup! I wish the in-laws would read a book!

Every piece of advice they give, we read in the books that it is either an old wives' tale or worse, HARMFUL.

Here's a few snippets of wisdom as an example:
1. Bumpers are a MUST HAVE baby item
2. I should have gotten a drop side crib since it's easier to get the baby in/out
3. I should be giving formula because it's easier - and no iron formula to prevent constipation (baby 411 says this is not true)
4. When I was still pregnant - I should skip the glucose test because the orange drink tastes bad

Family memebers will always have an opinion.

You have to learn just to ignore it. The only time it gets hard is when they are baby sitting for you.

Be prepared to hear these things for the rest of your life. Chat Icon

I think family members, friends, and our parents just forget what it was like when THEY were a new parent. They just assume they know better no matter what.

Sometimes I take the advice into consideration, other times I just nod my head and smile, and sometimes I just tell them "MYOB".

The thing that bothered me the most was....

" Your not going to put socks on him" and its spring time and his feet a hot! They would keep saying it until I put it on him.

ah! I hate that!

Chat Icon I tune it out. Chat Icon

My baby hates socks and shoes. Everyone is on my case about him not wearing socks. I can barely keep them on him after settling him into a shopping cart. He pulls them right off.

My oldest doesn't eat veggies and is a picky eater. I hear it constantly.

What's ironic is that all these things bother everyone else way more than it does me.

I just go with the flow and life is so much easier that way! One day my kids will wear socks and eat veggies. Just not right now. And that's okay!Chat Icon
