Something that McCain said last night that bothered me..

not sure if Obama has the same sentiment (he didn't say it last night if he does)

but McCain said that basically that it's no one's personal responsibilty that they are in financial trouble.

he laid ALL of the "blame" for the crisis (housing in particular) at the feet of the government and Wall Street.

I think this is extremely irresponsible, to let the people off the hook like that.

it's EVERYONE's fault.

I really don't believe this is his REAL feeling on the subject. I think he was pandering (as they ALLLLL DO) but it just makes me angry.

I'd rather help someone that ADMITS FAULT in getting themselves into a situation than help someone who blames everyone else.

again, I am not sure if Obama "thinks" the same way, but if he does, I don't like it either (so it would be bad on BOTH of them)

It is definitely not ALL to blame on the government, the banks or Wall Street. As someone who has worked in Financial Services, I can tell you that there are a lot of "questionable" items that could potentially get us in trouble in the long run. Subprime mortgages was one of those items. Unfortunately, the greedy banks, the uneducated population, and the "turn a blind eye" government all contributed to the housing meltdown. It is a complicated issue and McCain tried to oversimplify it in an effort to win over voters.

If it WAS the gov't and Wall Street's fault, then ALL of us would be in trouble.

Those of us who are responsible, are either doing fine, or managing. (I'm not referring to people who fell into hard times through no fault of their own, like a layoff, medical issues, etc). Most people who are in financial ruin are personally irresponsible, they just got caught with their pants down because of the market.

The market EXPOSED them, it didn't CAUSE anything.....

you dont get elected by telling the people you want to vote for you that the current economic crisis is their fault. he just said what he knew people wanted to hear.

well, we cut everything except veterans benefits, the $10B a month going toward the war, and buying back the bad mortgages.

The freeze applies to education, healthcare, and everything else.

I found it rather ironic since the McCain campaign is for less government. I think the reason we're in such a jam is b/c the gov't didn't step in until it was too late.

Maybe had the gov't done something before Wall St. blew up, we wouldn't be in the financial mess we're in.

not according to what he said last night

I heard education plans- Palin and her speical needs program for austic childern (not sure what she knows about that- since her child has downs)

and healthcare plans- his $5K tax rebate

so I am not sure what he defines as spending freeze- but then again- he is a walking contridiction these days

Obama said something similar in the last debate - I remember being annoyed by it. -

But you don't win votes by telling people THEY are the ones who screwed up - As ridiculous as it may seem -

Re: Something that McCain said last night that bothered me..

Yeah, I've noticed over the past few weeks that both candidates have spent a lot of time blaming "Wall Street" and "corporate greed" and never really mentioning, "Well if you only make $25,000 a year, you never should have accepted a $564,000 mortgage whether it was offered to you or not" (true story that was in my local paper last week - the family is claiming they didn't understand what they signed and protesting their foreclosure).

It's especially bugging me because I'm already mad that despite my own good personal financial choices, due to other people's mistakes, my home value has plummeted, my 401K is worth next to nothing, my tax money is going into the bail out plan, my bank has failed... so I wish even one of the candidates would be a straight talker and give Americans some tough love and address about the ever-vanishing concept of personal responsibility.

But realistically, I do understand that telling people what they NEED to hear instead of what they WANT to hear doesn't get the votes, so...
