2 year olds and milk

Can anyone shed some light here for me?

My 2 year old twins were used to having a bottle of milk when they first woke up and right before bed for quite some time.
Due to some personal issues in our family (cross country move and lots of changes), I put off the transition until after the holidays.
They drink from Sesame Street straw sippies with water all day long. So I bought DD a Hello Kitty straw sippy and DS a dinosaur straw sippy, both things they love.
They will not drink the milk from these sippies whatsoever. However I only tried for 3 days.
They do eat plenty of yogurt of cheese so they are not lacking for calcium.
Here are my questions
Should I keep trying with the sippies in the morning and they will eventually realize that this is how/ where their milk is found now?
Do they even need this milk? Or can the serving be eliminated all together?
Is it confusing to them that they still get a bottle at night? This is more for a soothing/winding down aspect rather than nutrition. I planned on switching the night bottle to a sippy too once the morning one was going smoothly.

TIA!

Re: 2 year olds and milk

My DS is 3 and will not drink milk out of anything but a bottle! He was off of them right before his 3rd birthday )late October) and then with all the chaos with the hurricane, he stopped drinking milk out of a cup and eating yogurt. So after 4 days, I gave him the bottle back... Not worth it for him as he has feeding issues.
He would not drink milk out of a straw cup at all. But he was drinking it out of a regular sippy cup. Maybe try a sippy instead of a straw cup...
He only gets a bottle of milk in the morning and one at night.. If they eat other dairy, I would keep at it with the morning milk in a cup... Good luck. They will come off of it when they are ready!

Almost every kid I know "refused" milk from a cup... just stick with it. Toss all the bottles so u won't give in. They get back to normal within 2 weeks.

Re: 2 year olds and milk

I went through similar with my 2.5 year old. He simply refused to drink milk out of anything but a bottle even though he drank juice during day out of sippy. Eventually he got use to it, took about 6 months. Now at almost 2.5 he rarely drinks milk. I give him lots of cheese & yogurt. The ped said it was fine as long as he had the other dairy products

2 year olds and milk

My 17 month old is going through this. I threw away my bottles so I don't turn back, but for the past 3 days she has only had a sip here and there of milk. She eats Cheese, but I feel like she should be getting more milk. My doctor said she wanted her off the bottle by 18 months. I have read kids don't need cows milk, but I think it is good for bones, & teeth, and would like her to have more milk. I guess just keep trying.

DD refuses milk, but she eats yogurt, cheese daily and she gets some milk from cereal she has every day. Ped said it was ok she wasn't drinking milk.

Thanks ladies. How long should I continue to offer it? Its a waste of milk for one and secondly its so sad to see them so sad without their beloved milk!
You don't think its sending mixed messages since they still get the bottle of milk at night? They know the bottles are technically not thrown away yet.

My DS didn't make the switch until after his 3bday. I too analyzed it and I cae to the conclusion that's it's cultural. I work with a lot of moms who are first generation Americans and they grew up with a bottle and "we" all stopped way before kinder.
So my son at 3.5 now drinks chocolate carnation breakfast from a sippy cup. He isn't the best eater so I don't mind the calories and he does get any dairy (I could give hime ice cream) We all have our vicess whether we'e 3.5 or 35.....

Re: 2 year olds and milk

My DS is 28 months and he has not had milk (other than in oatmeal) in 7 months since we stopped bottles. He refused to drink anything but water out of his sippy cups so eventually we stopped trying. He has cheese and yogurt almost every day and occasionally he has oatmeal which we use milk in. Every once in a while we try again (we've tried chocolate and strawberry milk) so hopefully he will have it again soon.

Re: 2 year olds and milk

my dd was much younger (about 12 mos) but what worked for her was a slow (and painful, lol) transition with 1oz milk, 7 oz water, then 2 oz/6oz, etc.

it took a while but now she drinks the straight milk from the straw cup (and the water from the same type of cup) with no problem.

We were able to transition to a sippy cup. Haven't bothered with milk in a straw cup. There were days he didn't want it in the sippy and we would give a bottle. He was exclusively breast fed and only recently weaned. I ran out of frozen bm and we introduced goat milk. He would only take a small bottle. 3-5 oz and pounds it down. So we would give a bottle if that was what he wanted because for the amount of time he was sucking on it was minimal.

Re: 2 year olds and milk

I do know a lot of my friends and family had this problem with their DC. SOme used a bottle after their DC's 2nd birthday some didn't and their kids just didn't drink milk anymore. I remember DS only taking sips from the straw cup for a few days but once he realized if he didn't drink from that he wouldn't get milk he got over it and now will drink multiple cups of milk at a sitting. I started at about 15 months. He is now 2
Good luck!

My DS refused to let the night bottle go. I tried at a year but he really wasn't ready yet. When he was 1.5 I tried again but instead of trying a sippy cup, I just put a regular plastic disposable straw in a cup (and I was drinking from a glass with a straw too) and he took it no problem. I think he felt it was different then the sippy cups he gets with water and he felt more grown up.
To help with spilling, I later bought tupperware cups that have a lid that i can stick a disposable straw in. I let him pick out his own straw too and I let him watch mickey mouse for 15 minutes in his high chair as he's drinking it. It was a good distraction.

Thanks ladies. I guess all kids are different. If they don't realize soon that this is their new source of milk, they will simply miss out. As far as the night bottle, I personally am not ready to eliminate that one just yet.

This for my twins too. At 12 months, I took away the bottles completely (they were really only getting 2 a day at that point anyway). First we started with the milk in the bottle. we did 1 oz. milk 7 oz formula etc. for about a week till they were fully on milk.

One of sons never really liked the milk. he drank it from the bottle, but not the way he gulped his formula down. After that, we took away bottles. That was a tough week, especially at night. They threw the sippy cups. They drank from them all day but wanted nothing to do with them at night.

The same son then refused to drink milk at all from the sippy cup. He would drink juice, water, just not milk. We just made sure their cereal had plenty of milk and they had cheese, yogurt, etc. It's been about a month now and now he loves milk from the sippy cup. He drinks it better than his brother. Guess he finally adjusted.

Hang in there. It takes time and is not easy.
