I try not to compare my twins but it is tough.

They are just about 2.

DD has recently had an explosion of words. She is talking like crazy and you can understand everything she says.

DS understands everything you say to him but it is hard to understand what he says. There are very few words that he says 100% clear. Should I be concerned?

Why don't you have early intervention come for a evaluation???
My twin sons are 14 months & we just were approved for speech for one of them already. The other is also talking a storm.
I say the earlier the better.

If receptive language (understanding) is not an issue, he probably won't qualify for speech. My DS is 3 and intelligibility is a huge issue at this point because he could not be understood in preschool. So it may be worth a call, but EI combines receptive scores with the speaking score.

Receptive is more important.

I called CPSE when DS@2 was 3. The ped said a third party caregiver should be able to understand 75%.....I couldn't understand 75%...He did qualify, but he had receptive issues as well.

Depending where his expressive skills fall, even if receptive is high, he will qualify. He would qualify based off of clinical judgement. I have many kids that receive a receptive score in the 90s and expressive in the 60 therefore they qualify. I work for an EI agency on LI. Feel free to FM me if you want any info.

I agree with this.

I had twin brothers and the most important lesson I learned was to let 'baby B' speak on his own. Do not interpret for him. I always understood him but the speech therapist said I had to stop 'translating' for him. Baby A did a lot better, faster. I think what also helped him and my own now, is that we refuse to speak in baby talk or repeat incorrectly or poorly spoken words. And yes, with AJ, I MAKE her say the words. Or I just pretend I didn't understand her.

But testing is the first thing I'd so. I took AJ in 3 times! She didnt get her 'explosion' until nearly 30m!

I know its hard not to compare, I fell victim to that with my twin brothers all the time. And by the time they were 5 one was most definitely behind the other, so it made it harder.

Speech wise, at 21 (nearly 22) one still struggles to be clear vs the other.
