DS Speech - should I be concerned?

OK, my DS (just under 22 months) has about 40 words (I actually wrote them all down before his last Dr. appt)! My concern is that he doesn't use them all the time......he had a playdate this morning with a girl 4 months older than him (who talks up a storm) and he said 1 word the whole playdate, "ball". The girls grandmother actually asked my mom what we are going to do about DS speech "are we going to get him evaluated"? I was feeling pretty good about all his words but her comment has me thinking. We do a lot of reading and I point to objects in books and he says what they are, he just doesn't use the words all the time. Any advice is truly appreciated.

Ooops! Sorry, I'm at work and had to rush reading the post. LOL!

It's totally normal to speak more at home than while out. They're more comfortable with you, surroundings, etc. and when they're out they just might be more shy and soaking everything in. Chat Icon

I think it's normal, and I think that girl's gma needs to MYOB Chat Icon. My DS had a ton of words at home but when we were out, he was always very quiet.

Exactly, when my DH and I are home, he talks a lot, but when we are out or at someone else's house, not so much.

Agreed about the grandmother!

Same here. Even at 3, sometimes DS will hardly say anything when we are out and then as soon as we are in the car he will give me a play-by-play of all the events of the day! He is totally an "observer."

Maybe he's just shy? If he's using the words around you and you see him comprehending, I wouldn't worry yet.

My DS is 3.5 and has a very extensive vocabulary now, though he had about 3 words when he was your DCs age. He does have problems with pragmatic speech though (basically social speech), particularly with his peers or out of the house. But he talks up a storm with us at home and also with anyone he is more comfortable with.

I would keep an eye on it, but it sounds pretty normal at just under 2.

Opinion of a speech therapist:

You can't ever compare girls and boys in terms of speech development.

That's pretty forward of that Gma to make that statement. Even adults are more quiet or shy when in public. That could very well be the case.
