How much do movers cost and when should i call to set up an appointment?

We signed contracts on a house in Oceanside and the on or about is 11/15. Hoping to either move over Thanksgiving weekend or over Christmas week. Any idea when i should call for estimates? Do they come to my house to see how much stuff I have or do I just tell them? Also do you think they are working day after Thanksgiing?

DH called three different moving companies. two of them just asked what we had and how many boxes in addition to furniture we'd need moved. the last company actually came by to see what we had.

you can start looking for a good deal now but you won't be able to officially book them until you know when you need to move in (and you won't know for sure until you have a closing date)

We moved from a 1-bedroom apt to a house about 15 minute drive away. i *think* the first two companies were charging us $700-ish for the move assuming it takes 5 hours. Then they were going to charge us more by the hour.

We had a referral to the third company so i'm not sure if they gave us a better deal than normal but it was a packing and moving company - they did EVERYTHING for $1100 (they came by the apt to see how much we had so they could provide a good estimate). Having them pack for us was the best thing ever and they did an amazing job. Oh, it was Molloy Bros.
