So I found out today I tested positive for Group B Strep. I was a little sad because I hate the thought of any "complications" but like he explained, 25% of all women test positive for GBS and only 1 in 200 newborns are affected when antibiotics are NOT given. If they are given, the stats change to 1 in 4,000. So I'm not worried... But I'm curious, does anyone know what type of antibiotics are given? I know they're intravenous but don't know the specific type and just don't want to have an allergic reaction to something I've never taken before. Last week my mom had to take levaquin and her throat closed, she literally almost died but the emergency physicians as SB saved her life. Anyway, just wondering if anyone knows.

On another note, I am 36+6 and 1cm dilated, 90% effaced! Getting closer!

ETA: I answered my own question - it is penicillin.

i'm only 13w but since i had to go to the ER, they tested me for this and let me know that i am also positive for GBS. it scared me too until i found out more about it.
I don't know what antibiotics they use for it, but i would ask your OBGYN about it at your next visit. Good Luck in the weeks ahead!

Thank you, honey!!! I actually found out it is penicillin so looks like I answered my own question!!

For you though, talk to your OB... Mine told me that results before 35 weeks mean nothing bc the bacteria comes and goes in a matter of a couple of weeks, since it is a normal living bacteria in the digestive system and vagina. So your positive at 13 weeks may be negative when you're nearing delivery... So just check with them!

I recall reading a magazine in my ob office that they use Penicillin. But I'm sure there must be some other meds bc many people are allergic to that.

Interesting!! I'm sure they ask if you have any drug allergies and saw you did so gave you something different. I'm not allergic to pen so should be okay!! Chat Icon
