2 year old and Tantrums

Help!

DS will be 2 next month and he has the art of tantrums done to a skill.

They have been ocurring more and more over the last 2.5 weeks.

We try reasoning with him - asking him to calm down and tell us what is wrong or explain that he can have an ice pop AFTER he has some dinner etc

None of it works - he puts something in his head and he won't let up until its HIS way.

We try time out, he calms down while he's there, then starts right back up with whatever it is he wants once he's out.

The other day he woke up at 630 am and wanted an ice pop - from that moment to almost 10:00 am he went on and on about wanting one. We explained that he can't have one now, he could have one later on today. He proceeded to go on with the whinning and trying to get on from the freezer.

I don't think there is anything wrong with him as far as being able to express himself - he speaks good for his age. Fact is he TOTALLY gets what we are saying - he just chooses to whine/throw fits to get his way.

Anyone have any siggestions or advice on how to control this a bit?
I know it comes with the age - but I feel like maybe he throws more then necessary.

Re: 2 year old and Tantrums

I know this is probably no help by my DS just turned 2 and when he throws a tantrum I do what you do, explain why he can't have what he wants and after that I ignore him. I'll talk to him about other things and ask if he wants some alternatives, etc. Luckily he isn't very persistent and just moves on after a few minutes. But if I had too, I would ignore him for hours. I keep telling myself that I'm in charge, not him. Good luck! Hope it gets better!

honestly, I just don't think they are capable of understanding reasoning right now. They only understand and care about what's going on at that very moment

DS is almost 22 months and sounds almost like what you described!! I've tried saying "first we ..... Then we ......." And if he isn't in full blow up mode he tends to get it. Other times, there is NO getting through to him so I ignore the tantrum until he calmer down a little. I find that the more I tell him no, the worse and longer it is. To be honest, I don't want to hear it, so while ignoring the tantrum may not be the best option, its the one that works for us for now.
