IVF Cost? Update w/ breakdown

So we had our IVF consult and went over the costs...we have GHI so we get 75% coverage...at NSUH the total cost including the storage, ICSI and a bunch of other things including the facility fee is $6500...I was just wondering if this was high since I cant compare it to anything...when I went to Dr. Zapantis they said it would be between $1500-$3000 but they didnt give me a breakdown...I was just wondering iwhere NSUH costs fell in the spectrum of IVF clinics.

Thanks

Re: IVF Cost?

Just to clarify I have insurance which is paying 75% of the cost so the $6500 is after the insurance payment...w/o insurance it would be over $25,000.

$25,000???? I am sorry for what???

I have never heard IVF costing 25K!!!! Top NYC clinics charge around 12K for standard IVF cycle...including IVF, ICSI....I don't have IVF insurance and that is what I paid!

I would check the price again...if your insurance is paying 75% and you are only responsible for 25%, at $6,500, you are getting ripped off....I know few people that had IVF with NSUH and paid under $10K without insurance!!!!

$25k seems high for a single round of IVF. I'm not sure what a "facility fee" is, etc. In general, IVF is usually around $10-12k. ICSI adds another $2,500. Storage is usually free for the first 6-12 months. So we'd really have to know what the $25k includes.

Re: IVF Cost?

I just assumed it was around $25k since I am paying close to $6500 with insurance..I am prob off with my figures since they prob offer a different rate if I were paying OOP which we are not...but besides that I am wondering if $6500 is a lot to pay for IVF with insurance coverage.

Its about $5000 without all the extras and then you start adding everything up its around $6500.

Re: IVF Cost?

It depends what kind of infertility coverage you have...

at $6,500 sounds like you don't have full infertility coverage. Looks like your insurance is only paying for the blood work & sonos (monitoring phase), which most of the times is considered standard procedures and covered under a medical plan..you are responsible to pay for ER, ET, ICSI and any hospital charges ($6,500)

My cycle at Cornell costs $12K but my insurance which doesn't cover infertility paid about $5K from that so my cycle costed me around $7K (plus meds)....I paid the $12K in full first but then submitted the claim forms and got reimbursed from the insurance company....

ETA: find out if anesthesia fee is included in the fee as it usually costs around $1k..most of the times that fee is also covered under insurance...

GL!

We have GHI and I just paid my co-insurance this week: $1300. Your co-insurance seems totally outrageous.

ETA: We have the same coverage (they cover 75% of IVF).

Re: IVF Cost?

I just recently got info from NS about IVF... of that $6,500 you mentioned... about $2,800 is fees that insurance does not cover at all including storage, freezing, thawing and co-pays... So I think you need to take that out of the $6,500, then you 25% portion would be closer to $3,700 (depends on you co-pays and stuff also). Still seems high...3,700 x 4 = 14,800 + 2800= 17,600 total cost to you and insurance co, but thats the best i can do with the info you gave and I have from NS!

That also includes the facility fee which is $1,200 which since they are at a hospital we have to pay for but it all just seems like so much to me...

Re: IVF Cost?

I did the Attain program last year at NS and that was just under $20,000. However, it included 3 fresh snd 3 frozen cycles. I think the it was around $13,000 for a single fresh cycle. I would ask them for a breakdowm. I dont have any IF coverage so i always paid completly OOP. As someone else said, freezing, storage, icsi and some other things are additional b/c not everyone that does IVF uses them. If they have you pay upfront for them and you do not use them NS credits your account. Good luck!

Re: IVF Cost?

I had Several rounds at nsuh some with insurance and some without. When an insurance says 75%, it may not be 75% of the OOP fee. It may be 75% of the billed price which is more expensive. It's so confusing. I actually preferred pay OOP because I new exactly what I was paying up front. With insurance only after the fact did I find out that mid way I had already reached my maximum.

Re: IVF Cost?

it must be the storage fees that r jacking it up?? idk

we have ghi and we paid 4k..but that was bc we udes oon benefits plus cost of immune management

storage and freezing were covered...we got 6 months free then it is 50 a month

ICSI was not covered BUT IT DEPENDS ON UR DX.. for us bc it was not a mf issue they did not cover it

so in total we paid 6k..but that was oon

Re: IVF Cost?

This is the breakdown:

Basic IVF including ICSI & Assisted Hatching: $3,099.69

Non-covered services including co-payments & storage for 1 yr: $2,220

Plus there is a $1,200 facility fee and this does not include anesthesia which would be an additional $500.

So the total cost w/o meds would be $7,000.

Does this sound about right or high?

Re: IVF Cost? Update w/ breakdown

Sit down with them and tell them you need help, see if they will work with you. Sometimes, the doctors will accept the 75% as full payment! You have to sit down with the financial people and make a request. See what happens, you never know. A friend of the family had to negotiate but she ended up paying the 10% instead of 25%

By the way, by the time all was said and done, soup to nuts, it came out to $30,000 Chat Icon Thank God for insurance

ITA! I think you're better off sitting down with the office manager/financial assistant at the doctor's office that you choose. Most of the time, the doctor's office will work with you. (Sometimes, they don't!)
Does your insurance have any in-network offices, where even co-pays are covered?
I think that all sounds about right. I've tried every year to claim my out-of pocket expenses on taxes, but we never quite get to the 7.5% with numerous cycles during the year. It's ridiculous! We'll talk more later.

Re: IVF Cost? Update w/ breakdown

I dont know if its more of the fact that it sounds really expensive...I want to be able to go in and have some more knowledge as to what it costs at other facilities...If I go in and just say that its too much will they just say that its our cost and thats it? I didnt think it was negotiable...I have an appt for a check next week and I will see if I can sit down with the financial person and go over the costs...if its going to be that much there and another facility can do it cheaper then we may just need to go someplace else...I really dont want to have to do that but for us cost is a factor.

I wont be able to claim this on my taxes since we wont be able to get to 7.5% Chat Icon

Re: IVF Cost? Update w/ breakdown

I think you should also call GHI and find out if the reimbursement amounts are different for a facility. Is the only difference between going to a facility vs a private office the $1,200?

LI IVF had a package for IVF w/ ICSI and asissted hatching. (along with all the monitoring visits/blood work/testings) for about $12K with out insurance.

i have GHI but not sure if we have the same plan....I paid a percentage for every procedure and then the full anesthesia cost ($500). And when comparing to your breakdown i paid alot less for each procedure. I know going to a facility increases the cost that's why i chose LI IVF.

I got quoted at RSOFNY and I also have GHI they told me IVF with ICSI would probably be about $2200 not including storage which they said would be about $65 per month but it's still seems to be under what you were quoted.

Re: IVF Cost? Update w/ breakdown

I think NSUH is just that more expensive...I was told that it would be more but I did not expect it to be 2x more than the otehr facilities...I actually made IVF consult appt.s with RSNY and LI-IVF next week to see what the cost would be at those facilities...Thanks everyone for the information!!!
