What's your preferred hospital to use for delivery when the time comes?

I had thought I'd prefer Northshore Manhasset over LIJ....but I snuck over to the pregnancy board and saw someone posted that LIJ has all private rooms now and it's like a hotel!! I wasn't a big fan when my sister delivered there in '08, but maybe w/ the renovation they've improved since then.

I don't know anything about the hospital rooms, but I'm choosing based on location, and I'd want either Southside or Good Sam. Either one is about 10-15 minutes from me, and other ones like Stony Brook are at least 25-30. I'd hate to be having my baby on the side of the road!!!

I don't know much about the hospitals around here either. But I can see Good Sam from my house - soooo I'm going with that! Plus that's who my Dr. is Affiliated with

With the choices I have by me, i would definitly choose Stony Brook. They have the new maternity ward and they have a great NICU if needed.

LIJ New Hyde Park has a brand new Women's Hospital. It's not just renovations of the old rooms, its an entire new building dedicated to women's health. I delivered at LIJ prior to the new building and while the rooms def sucked my care was fantastic. I haven't seen the new building but I hear its absolutely amazing (i live right down the block and watched them building it for the past few years). Another good thing about LIJ New Hyde Park is that Cohen's Children's Hospital is attached and has one of the best NICUs around. My DD was a preemie and was in the NICU there for almost a month and she got fantastic care.

Are they different hospitals? I thought North Shore Hospital was North Shore LIJ?

Re: what would be your hospital of choice when it comes time for delivery?

Probably Southside or Good Sam, because they are closest and as long as it all goes well, it doesn't make much difference to me.

But if I have complications because of my fibroid then I wouldn't mind being at North Shore because they are supposed to be the best. My mom drove from East Islip to North Shore to deliver because she was extremely high risk.

But my doctor is through Good Sam, so unless I get any madder at her and switch, I will be there.

Re: what would be your hospital of choice when it comes time for delivery?

Had my son @ Good Sam in West Islip and
my DD @ St.Charles in port jeff.. both were awesome choices IMO.

If I have my 3rd it will be at Southampton Hospital where my OB is affiliated.

Even though we aren't TTC just yet...I am looking for a doctor affiliated with the new women's hospital...I hear it is amazing and the care is awesome. I love my doc but he is affiliated with Mercy (which I am not crazy about) and South Nassau (which is a little far from me in Queens now that I moved). I am trying a new doc in May so hopefully I will like her as much as I like my old doc!

I think we have the same Dr bc mine also is only affiliated with mercy and south nassau. SN is the closest to me but I want the care of Cohen's NICU just in case bc my last delivery was a bit crazy and I had pre eclampsia. Can you FM who you are trying out? I am also looking for one affiliated with LIJ.. I was originally looking into North shore but that is so far from me.

yes they are different, here's the info on Manhasset:

NSM

North Shore took over LIJ some years ago, but they are different hospitals (I'm in Howard Beach Queens so they're both kind of equal distance for me).

My sister delivered at LIJ in 2004 and in 2008 (c-section 2nd time around).....and the care she had in '08 was poor in comparison to 2004. I don't know if it was b/c she wasn't a "new mom" or just b/c she had a c-section and needed more help but I thought they did not take proper care of her (took great care of my nieces though!). My sister was in so much pain after the c-section it was like she had gastritis, and can you believe they NEVER gave her colace? I had to run out and buy it for her to help with her stomach pain. They didn't give her those big cuff things to put on her legs either (to help w/ circulation the first day b/c you're not supposed to move around too much after the c-section). My friend who delivered at Northshore Manhasset and had a c-section seemed to receive much more attentive/compassionate care. So I guess my sis just had a bad week!! Otherwise, in 2004 I thought her nurses were great (and I know b/c I was there two days in a row for like 12 hours each! lol). I was beginning to think that maybe LIJ was overwhelmed with the number of patients they have in the maternity ward, so I hope that I have a good experience there if I choose to deliver there!!

Good Sam is my #1 choice. I have friends who work in L&D and I've heard nothing but great things about it. I've also had friend who've delivered at Stony Brook and have had great experiences there.

well, my doctor is affiliated with st charles, so that's where i would be going... and i'm 100% happy with that choice. my mom was a delivery room nurse there for 30 years and has a great repetoire (sp?) with the staff there. that hospital has been near and dear to my heart for my entire life, and i was born there Chat Icon

Re: what would be your hospital of choice when it comes time for delivery?

I delivered DS at St. Charles and I LOVED it there!
*For one, I didn't get sent home when I first came in; I believe that if I would have went to a large hospital, they would have sent me home. (I was only 1 cm when I got to the hospital at 7pm, and didn't start to progress more until about 10am the next day!)
*The staff was WONDERFUL...I loved my L&D nurse so much, as well as the nurses on the maternity ward.
*My DS spent a week in the NICU at St. Charles. It's a small NICU, but the nurses were very caring and helpful.
*I love the visiting hours that they have there, even if they didn't apply to us because of our DS in NICU. They are 2-4 for grandparents, and 7-8 for everyone else. During the 7-8 visiting hours, the babies are to remain in the nursery, which I like.
*Most likely, you will not have to share a room. I didn't have to share a room during my stay, and it looked like noone else had to either.
*They have a breakfast buffet every morning which is amazing!

OK, so after all this is said and done, I am most likely going back to St. Charles although I heard Stony Brook has a gorgeous maternity ward with all private rooms and delicious food. I would definitely like to take a tour of Stony Brook, to check out how nice it is.

My doctor is affliated with Winthrop as well and I also heard their NICU is one of the best. That is comforting to know.

I would love to deliver at Stony Brook hospital. My doctor is affiliated with them anyway, so it works out!
