Is this a reasonable concern? (FET related)

I'm notorious for FINDING things to worry about Chat Icon Chat Icon

I'm nervous that we will thaw embies for the FET and they won't survive the thaw, or if we thaw two, then one wouldn't survive (and I want to increase our chances of this working as much as possible, so I am expecting to put back two!)

For those that know about FETs (lurkers, come in please!! Chat Icon ) .. is this a reasonable concern?

When DH and I went for pre IVF counseling (mandatory at my RE), she told us you can expect 2 of 3 to survive the thaw. I am not sure how accurate that is, but it is what we were told. That being said, you have a great number of embryos and I believe I remember reading they were of good quality!

You should probably talk to your RE about your concern.. I am not sure the protocol as I have never had an FET. Good luck!!!!

Why not thaw 3? I'm pretty sure they can refreeze if need be (or at least try).

Yea that's an option, but I read online it's not good to refreeze. Although I have to stay away from google!! I know I always say that to other people and here I amChat Icon

Besides, google says subchorionic hematomas cause a loss in 1% of pregnancies Chat Icon It's so true that you just have to wait and see what happens!!

According to my RE office, there is a 25% chance an embroyo will not survive the thaw process

ETA - however, I think the better the quality the embroyo is at the time of the freeze, then the better the chance of it surviving the thaw. So from what I read on your other thread, they seem to be doing well! Fingers and toes crossed for you! Chat Icon

I did 2 FETs with blasts. Each time we thawed 2 and 2 survived the thaw! I too searched on google and went crazy. That is why they freeze blasts - b/c they have the best thaw rate. I also believe that blasts can be thawed same day so in case one doesn't make it, I believe they can thaw another one.

I've always thawed only as many as we want to transfer. When we lost 2 in a thaw, they just thawed 2 more and it was no problem at all. They can thaw them that same morning/day. Don't worry!!

It really depends upon whether your lab does vitrification to freeze embies or freezes them the old way. If they do vitrification, the success rates of most labs is I believe that 95-98 percent survive the thaw. I had three embies that were frozen via vitrification and all three survived the thaw. If your lab freezes them the old way..still..because you have frozen blasts, you have a really great shot at all of your blasts surviving the freeze. Also look into how long it takes your lab to defrost an embie...perhaps if God forbid one does not survive, they can then thaw another and do the ET a few hours later. GL!!

i agree with PP, i was always told for our FET that if we wanted to transfer 3, they would thaw until we had 3 embies to transfer.

we did two FET and all embies survived the thaw. good luckChat Icon

Re: Is this a reasonable concern? (FET related)

Before each FET I had to sign of on our "thawing plan". It spelled out exactly what what happen if one or both of the embryos didn't survive. They were frozen in batches of 1,2, and 3 and each vial was numbered. The plan was detailed as to which one they would thaw next in every scenario possible so nothing was left to chance. Ex. Thaw 2 from vial #1, if only one survives then thaw 1 from vial #4, if that does not survive....

Everyone was EXTREMELY helpful, thank you so much!! I no longer have anxiety over this ... I was getting worried because I thought the "thawing" process was a much bigger deal.
