Do you think this is reasonable (salary related)

Hi girls, sorry in advance if this is TMI but I need some advice. I got a job offer and I am trying to figure out what a reasonable counteroffer should be. I am a CPA in public accounting and I am currently making $65,000 a year with 5 weeks vacation. The offer I got for a new job also in public accounting was $68,000 with a $1,00 sign on bonus, but I am only gonna get 3 weeks vacation. I am thinking of counter-offering with $72,000 per year plus the $1,000 sign on bonus. Does that seem reasonable? TIA

Is the salary negotiable? I usually thought a counteroffer was utilized when another company is trying to compete with the other?

However, I think a jump from 65 to 70 is fair, but 72K might be a little too much of a jump.

Re: Do you think this is reasonable (salary related)

id go for 75- why?

if you say 72 they will probably come back at 70 and you will agree

if you say 75 they will probably come back 72-73 (there is 2-3k in your pocket for having a slight bit more confidence)

but please dont base what you do on me- im just saying what I would do
(i negotiate for a living)

either way sounds like a great offer and congrats and good luck!

Well it is really a jump from 68,000 (their original offer) to 72,000 (what I am askin for)

And yes, salary is always negotiable, if they want you bad enough, they will pay up. The worst they can say is "we can only offer you 68,000 or whatever the case may be)

Thanks girls

I would counter because at $68,000 it would seem like a lateral move (salary wise) - what you lose in vacation they just make up in salary...but IMO I'd rather have the 2 extra weeks vacation over the $3,000.

Definitely counter...if they can't negotiate then maybe this is not the move to make.

ETA: Unless of course they are telling you less hours...but in accounting I would be surprised by that.

I have to agree with this too. I used to work in public accounting and they have the money to spend if they want you bad enough. My only concern is if during interviewing you have already they them a range that was lower.

what's your incentive to leave your current job? that IMO is the real question!

do you hate your boss, co-workers, think you are underpaid (which IMO, you are!)

I say ask for more $$ and vacation. they know you're employed, they need to be offering you a lot more $!

Hers some words from your much wiser slightly older sister. Negotiate with both points. Offer either 70 plus 5 weeks vacation or 75 with 3 weeks!

Re: Do you think this is reasonable (salary related)

It really depends on what you want.

They will probably be able to offer you more vacation time than money more easily.

What do you want?

After you decide on what you want..put the counter offer out to them keeping in mind your bottom line.

Re: Do you think this is reasonable (salary related)

I recently read an article (it was either Cosmo or Glamour) that discussed how women were often underpaid, because they were afraid to ask for a raise. Too bad I don't still have it...there were some good pointers in there. ANYWAY, go for it! Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Can you negotiate for the vacay? Sorry if I didn't read if you tried that...but I would do that...$70K plus 5 weeks vacay. If not, then go for $75K...if they want you bad enough, they'll pay it!! Chat Icon

Re: Do you think this is reasonable (salary related)

I agree...I would negotiate salary and vacation...worst they can say is no.

I would go for the 75 and 5 weeks vacation...maybe they chew you down to 70 or 72 and 4 weeks vacation...this way you get extra $$$ and an extra week of vacation.

Good luck!
