Re: Anyone concerned about eating fish
I think the effects of the oil spill will effect other bodies of water eventually and I don't think the gov't will tell us the truth.

Re: Anyone concerned about eating fish
A lot of the commercial fish is farmed.. so I'm not really worried about what I buy from most markets.
I didn't even think about the potential for there to be challenges with the fresh fish that I get from the Montauk boats. I have to believe there are no effects this far up yet.. but give it a few months..

Yeah, I eat wild/non farmed mostly and they can't possibly get all of the oil and the clean up contaminants out of the water. It's eventually going to effect more than the gulf.
I eat fish 3-4 times a week. I ate it 5 times last week but after reading some well thought out things and talking to a few folks who brought this up, it got me concerned.
Obviously, I'm ok now but 20 years from now what effects could it have?

That is largely a shrimping area too, and they said they aren't shrimping right now. It will effect the prices I bet.

Re: Anyone concerned about eating fish
I have been thinking about it. When the spill first happened - that first week, I went to the store and purchased a lot of canned tuna. I figured that the tuna in my store was from before the spill. I still have some of the cans in my pantry. I am not sure what I am going to do once we run out of the supply. I got enough to realistically last us 6-8 months.

Re: Anyone concerned about eating fish
No, but then again I only buy local fish from my fishmonger in Hampton Bays, or frozen fish from Costco.
ETA: I'm not worried...yet

I generally don't eat fish but now I really won't! You bring up a good point that I didn't even think of.

Re: Anyone concerned about eating fish
Of course I ate sushi last night and with every bite I thought about it.
I am very concerned.
I think I'm going to lay low for a while with fish.

Same here. I don't eat a lot of shrimp, but I should probably think more about where it's coming from.

Ok, this is probably going to make me sounds really dumb (so feel free to laugh!) but why would shellfish be worse than other fish?

Re: Anyone concerned about eating fish
Before the spill, I saw a news story ( 60 minutes i think) about imported fish and shellfish from places like Thailand, South America, etc, where there are tons of pollutants allowed into the waterways. Said fish is exported to the US, and our overwhelmed FDA inspectors inspect only a FRACTION of imported fish. Once I heard that, I almost stopped eating frozen shrimp, or shrimp at restaurants (origin I don't know).
You must know where your fish is comming from is the bottom line. Buy local fish from fishermen/seafood stores where you know it's local.
Dh loves to fish, unfortunately the fishing regulations in NYS have become so restrictive as to size and number, that it's becomming almost impossible for the 'little guys' in NY to catch fish, the commercial vessels have the upper hand.
