Wow, this thread has left me speechless! Chat Icon Chat Icon

And it reminded me of when I was 13 and asked mom for new "Nike" sneakers (they were $65)...she couldn't afford them and said if I wanted them I had to get a job and earn them. I've been working since then. Started freshman year of high school and bought myself everything. Chat Icon

My nieces and little sister in GA ask for things, yes, it's normal. But they wear clothes from Target and TJ Maxx and Old Navy and are happy and grateful...like kids should be. Of course, parenting plays a huge role and my brother and sister are very religious and place importance on God, not material things. So I guess they teach the girls the same values.

And W T F is with the kid thongs? Chat Icon

God help us!! Chat Icon

Now that I think about it - why do they even make thongs in kid sizes????????

Honestly- i think WAY too many moms are trying to live Vicariously through their daughters. Or, if not just for that, then they probably think its just as much of a "status" symbol for their daughters to have the bags as it is for Them to have one.

Abercrombie was where i was when i saw the WORST case of a mom Perpetuating this. her daughter looked no older than 14 (even with her fake nails, bag and make up), and the mom was like 'oh you haaaaaave to try this on" Try it on? i thought it was something to floss my teeth with (and really, im not THAT conservative) Chat Icon

Moms living through their kids and the loose use of values and morals is probably why herpes is so rampant with kids right now (hello, there's NO CURE! Chat Icon ) and oral sex is "no biggie"...Chat Icon

I agree it's disturbing to see them with bags that we have or want but I see it as coming full circle. I remember my twin wanting Benneton shirts or anything else that had a logo on it (I went for things with discreet branding like Liz Clairborne). Perms started at...was it 14? I also remember my classmate getting a convertible BMWer for her 16th birthday -- which was wrecked of course. We used to joke & refer to them as the "Daddy says" girls - as in "Daddy said I can get x.y.z". We were lucky - our dad would get us a tire if ours was flat.Chat Icon

We must have grown up in the same town. I remember being *tortured* in high school because I had a beat up old volvo instead of a brand new BMW, Mercedes or Porsche! I remember one kid who was given a Delorian for his 16th bday and he wrecked it a week later, and was complaining to everyone that his dad would only replace it with a new porsche Chat Icon Chat Icon I HATED growing up in that kind of environment, especially because my parents, though they had the money, refused to buy me expensive things. I was absolutely tortured, but in the end, that's what made me the person I am, while most of my peers are still living at home on mommy and daddy's bill. It just really, really worries me because I don't want to raise my child in that kind of environment, but I'm starting to wonder if there really is anyway to avoid it Chat Icon

Re: I just don't get it

I have a 9 year old stepdaughter....she doesn't carry a purse or even want one. She doesn't even like to shower or comb her hair...so there is no way she would ask for highlights or something. She knows she's not getting a cell phone until she gets a job and pays for it.

However...she has asked for a training bra because other girls in her class have them. She is in 4th grade...does not need one, but wants one because the other kids do. This other girl (whom she references all the time is younger...and looks like a boy...does not need one either and she is only 8) Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: I just don't get it

I am 38 and I still haven't bought myself a coach bag.
I bought my first car when I was 25 and could afford to pay for it and insure it myself.
I have had 2 manicures in my life - one was for my wedding.

Boy, are my children going to be deprived.....Chat Icon

honestly-- it's a little ridiculous how young kids are getting into this stuff-- although I do recall that, probably starting in 5th grade-- I needed to have my designer bag of the moment- the Il Bisante-- they were definitely not cheap and I probably had like 3 or 4 over a period of time. So- it's always going to be something-- but, kids today are just TOO aware of this stuff-- it's beyond fad.

I remember the Il Bisante! Chat Icon And my matching brown leather jacket HAD to have a map inside of it (forget the brand.) Edwins, Big Johns, E.G's. Gotta luv GN! Chat Icon

See I do think its more a metro area thing..

I have family in South Carolina and PA...both with Kids of that age..and they act NOTHING like the kids here do...

The areas are more rural of course....

If Wisconsin is bad...maybe like UTAH??

Chat Icon

Haha, I'm not wisconsin... but pretty much might as well be Chat Icon

I live in the shenandoah valley of Va... where the livestock outnumber the humans. Chat Icon

Lots o' 'city folk' movin in though... tarnishing the area (like me. hehe).

My very good friend is moving there.

This why I hate kids today. My neighbors kids have every part of their bodies pierced drive nice cars and have "drinking parties" every weekend! I saw the mother out there on a monday morning cleaning up beer bottles. She had at least 4 cases of bud light. They park in front of my house and drop the beer bottles all over my lawn. W T F! My mother would beat me! Chat Icon

The first time I met the mother she introduced herself to me and said its pretty quiet around here now but in the summer its a party house Chat Icon This is QUIET? I cant wait for the summer NOT Chat Icon
