I just don't get it
Today I had a great spa day at the red door spa. This was a great gift from Dh and I totally appreciated it. What blew my mind was the 13 year olds getting spa treatments wearing tons of tiffany jewelry and lugging around huge tote coach bags....

Re: I just don't get it
unfortunatly it's all too common. My sister is about to turn 15, and she's been getting her hair professionally straightened for about 2 years now... my 5th graders have cell phones.
It's crazy.

now now... the life of a 13 year old is VERY stressful. I mean, what if that girl they don't like shows up to school with the same coach tote. That would just be AWFUL.

Re: I just don't get it
My friend at work was just asking my what type of Coach bag to buy her 11 yr old!
She wanted an inexpensive one none the less BUT...I plain out told her...why would you spend sooo much money for an 11 yr old? Makes no sense to me..
and to buy a knock-off to me just perpetuates the problem that they want a very name brand costly item...

Where I am now isn't too bad with fashions... Though I do have girls who get their hair professionally highlighted, ect. (at 10 and 11 years old).
Where I'm moving to near DC though, I'm sure my students will be showing up with backpacks that are worth as much as my car

I think it is inevitable that ALL places will be like this..
I mean these teenagers look at the celebs of today and want to be like that.... I can see why itis happening...
When i was a kid the celebs weren't out and about into the designer stuff the way they are now

Re: I just don't get it
I CURRENTLY have a collection of different types of Coach and Kate Spade bags in my classroom closet because the girls in my school leave them unattended outside my classroom. So I hide them! I don't give them back until they're in tears on the floor outside my room wondering where it disappeared to. And some have just never bothered to ask me if I've seen it, so I keep them locked up until they're smart enough to come ask. I would say five times a week I am lecturing a 10 year old about taking care of their things....namely, their Coach bags
ETA: Don't even get my started on the second graders with their hair dyed and highlighted and french tips on their nails. OR the fourth graders who very openly tell everyone they ONLY wear thongs and don't even own a pair of full-butt underwear

Re: I just don't get it
See I do think its more a metro area thing..
I have family in South Carolina and PA...both with Kids of that age..and they act NOTHING like the kids here do...
The areas are more rural of course....
If Wisconsin is bad...maybe like UTAH??

Re: I just don't get it
I'd have to say I've seen it here in GA too, but not too bad.
I just don't understand the NEED for a 15 yr old to have a cell phone, a name brand bag better than say, Nine West, clothes they wear for a year at most....
I don't spend $50 on jeans for myself and I wear them for YEARS.
It's truly disgusting.
At 16 I got my nails done for a Sweet 16 and that was cuz I was lucky!!
