Re: I just don't get it

honestly-- it's a little ridiculous how young kids are getting into this stuff-- although I do recall that, probably starting in 5th grade-- I needed to have my designer bag of the moment- the Il Bisante-- they were definitely not cheap and I probably had like 3 or 4 over a period of time. So- it's always going to be something-- but, kids today are just TOO aware of this stuff-- it's beyond fad.

I CURRENTLY have a collection of different types of Coach and Kate Spade bags in my classroom closet because the girls in my school leave them unattended outside my classroom. So I hide them! I don't give them back until they're in tears on the floor outside my room wondering where it disappeared to.Chat Icon And some have just never bothered to ask me if I've seen it, so I keep them locked up until they're smart enough to come ask. If there is one thing that peeves me, it's when little girls wear women's wear!!! I hate it!!! I hate seeing young girls wearing what it on the manequins in Bebe! Skeeves me out! Let girls be girls. There is no need to rush them to grow up! They don't need Louis Vuitton, they don't need highlights in there hair at 7, they don't need cell phones at 9. What's next? BMW's at 12??? I agree it's disturbing to see them with bags that we have or want but I see it as coming full circle. I remember my twin wanting Benneton shirts or anything else that had a logo on it (I went for things with discreet branding like Liz Clairborne). Perms started at...was it 14? I also remember my classmate getting a convertible BMWer for her 16th birthday -- which was wrecked of course. We used to joke & refer to them as the "Daddy says" girls - as in "Daddy said I can get x.y.z". We were lucky - our dad would get us a tire if ours was flat.Chat Icon

I'm not looking forward to dealing with this with my children. When I went to sign my son up for Kindergarten at a catholic school, I had a 30 minute conversation with the principal about the amount of jewelry & no pocketbook rule. I'm thinking it may not be such a bad idea...

You know, I don't even think I carried a purse until I was in high school. I couldn't give a shite what name brand I was wearing when I was in elementary school either.

These moms nowadays need to stop making their daughters into mini princesses. Then we see shows like My Super Sweet 16 and we want to shoot them because they're such stuck up spoiled brats!!

I'm very thankful I have a son.Chat Icon

See I do think its more a metro area thing..

I have family in South Carolina and PA...both with Kids of that age..and they act NOTHING like the kids here do...

The areas are more rural of course....

If Wisconsin is bad...maybe like UTAH??

Chat Icon

Chat Icon DH is from Wisconsin, and having visited with him, it is more down to earth than the metro NY area. It's funny though, his cousin has 2 girls, one who is 13. And she was very into labels, trendy stuff, etc. But her parents were very selective in how much she was allowed to have. They really don't want their kids to be spoiled.

Now I live up in Putnam County and the teenagers here look like regular teenagers. This is not an affluent county, so I think that is a factor. But when we are down at The Westchester it's a TOTALLY different story! It's mind-boggling.

Re: I just don't get it

It really is sad how materialistic kids are the days and even sadder to think that its only the beginning for them, they have a whole life time to go. I didn't get my nails done til late in high school. I always begged my mom for cool jeans back in the day, I think it was farlows and cavarrici when they were big and one year I got them for Christmas and honestly, they stunk and after a few wears were ripping..total waste of money. My cheapie clothes lasted years longer. I hate going into the nail salon now to get my nails done and have a snotty little 10 year old next to me, chatting on her cell phone about stuff I didn't discuss til I was 20, yelling to her mommy that she needs to get this and that because so and so has it. We have turned into such a materialistic society, where family is second to to a cell phone and that is SAD!!!!! My family was the most important thing to me growing up, now kids barel even know their families because instead of going to grandmas, they have to be seen at a social event with so and so. SAD SAD SAD!!! JMO!!! I miss the good old days when all that mattered when you were a kid was when your curfew was, what snack you'd trade with your friends at school, what clothes of your friends you were going to borrow. Now its I gotta have this and that!!!

i bought my first coach bag only a few years ago, at 28!

what is with the parents that do all this for their kids?? my kids can have a cell phone when they can afford to pay the bill each month - they will learn the hard way, NOT to go over their minutes

I find it very disturbing. My cousin has a 6 yr old and when I saw her last she had on a little lipstick, maybe eye shadow, nails all done and maybe a knock off pocketbook. I said to my cousin "is your daughter wearing make up" she smiled and said of course, she likes to put a little on when she sees me putting make up on. It's no big deal. It's cute"

I really dont find it to be "cute"
And then parents wonder what could they have done to stop a pervert from attacking their little child. Chat Icon

Yup. My cousins daughter wears them. She told me she loves to wear them. Especially if she is on the playground because then she doesnt have a wad of undewear going up her butt.

Re: I just don't get it

well imo, it all has to do with the boundaries that the parents are setting for their children.

I spoil my daughter with what I can, but when she is old enough to work, if she wants something she will have to earn it.

My sister and I were talking about this yesterday in the nail salon. Why would you want to start getting tips that young?????

I got my first Coach bag on my 28th birthday! I remember when I was younger I wanted a Tommy Hilfiger tshirt and my mom got me one from T J Maxx for like $25 dollars. I was sooo happy. That was about the extent of my designer wardrobe!

Wow, this thread has left me speechless! Chat Icon Chat Icon

And it reminded me of when I was 13 and asked mom for new "Nike" sneakers (they were $65)...she couldn't afford them and said if I wanted them I had to get a job and earn them. I've been working since then. Started freshman year of high school and bought myself everything. Chat Icon

My nieces and little sister in GA ask for things, yes, it's normal. But they wear clothes from Target and TJ Maxx and Old Navy and are happy and grateful...like kids should be. Of course, parenting plays a huge role and my brother and sister are very religious and place importance on God, not material things. So I guess they teach the girls the same values.

And W T F is with the kid thongs? Chat Icon

Re: I just don't get it

I can't believe all the things that I'm reading. My younger cousins do have cell phones, but the ones that are "emergency" types.
Expensive bags & clothing: don't even think of asking for it.

IMO: parents need to put up limits. Want something bad enough? Do chores around the house & earn it.

PS: I got my first COACH bag at 24.
