Weight
Ok, so I keep seeing weight coming up here and there. We all know there is some connection between weight/infertility but it certainly is not the be all/end all of infertility.
Here is my question: For those of you that consider yourselves to be "overweight" what do you use to base that on: actual # on the scale, clothing size, BMI??
Just curious b/c some of the women referring to themselves as "overweight" sure look fine to me!!! And just for the record, I'm overweight by all three of the above mentioned criteria!!

Re: Weight
This is one of the issues i am supposed to be working on. I am plus size and am supposed to be losing weight during this process. I would love to even if it weren't for trying to get preg.

Re: Weight
I consider myself overweight because, among other reasons, I shop at plus size stores. Lane Bryant, The Avenue, Dress Barn Woman, etc.
I am 5'9" tall and a size 18/20.

Re: Weight
I think I attribute much of my IF issue to it, b/c Dr. Brenner does. I had an appointment with him today and that's the only thing he thinks is the issue (besides age).
But look at it this way, it's not the fat that prevents people from getting pregnant. It's what usually goes hand-in-hand with weight that causes issues: (PCOS) excess androgen production, insulin resistance, not being able to get to the ovaries easily during retrieval, finding the proper dosage of medication, b/c fat may absorb some of the meds and it won't get into the bloodstream, etc. A woman may be overweight and not have the above problems. A woman might not be overweight and still have some of the above problems.
ETA: I'm just plain fat, by every criteria and then some.

Re: Weight
I'm overweight as well but not one doc has brought that up to me. If I lost 25 pounds I would be fine but I'm not that concerned since the docs aren't and I brought it up.

Re: Weight
I am overweight byall of the criteria as well. I am 5'9" as well and flutucate from 18-20 to a 22 sometimes. When I started out 2 years ago I was mostly around a 16-18.
I don't have PCOS, I've never had it, no insulin problems, no high blood pressure, nothing.
I haven't had one doctor say that my m/c's were from my weight or that it has been stumbling block to me getting pregnant.

Re: Weight
I was overweight when i started this IF journey and I am still overweight and more so....I also quit smoking a year ago and that has brought my size up as well. My RE's opinion was and still is that weight could play some sort of part in IF but it is not the whole or big picture. He always weighs ( )the age to weight factor..."Would you be better off waiting to lose weight while you get older and older. . .nope"

My problem with this thought is like yours...not all fat women are infertile and there are plenty of thin women that are. And like Dawn said, to take too much time to try and lose weight and you may have another problem of age! I hope that your SIRM consult brings more to light.
ETA: I think that if you are overweight, and not getting pg, it just becomes an excuse for the RE at some point, because it's such an easy one to blame.

I have to respectfully disagree with this statement. I am slightly overweight (20 pounds) and although this has never been an issue with me personally, I think it's a lot different if you are obese.
Just from my observations on here and amongst friends, I have seen a big difference in how people respond to meds based on their weight. It is a problem, especially if you have PCOS. PCOS is essentially a problem with blood sugar and weight is direct side effect. The problem arises with getting someone to lose that weight. Realistically, a person who is 50 pounds overweight is not going to lose that weight in a few months, it can take years. So the RE's will tell you it's a problem, but only you can really make the decision to lose the weight.

Re: Weight
If your weight is causing all of these other problems that were explained.. Than in my opinion it is a factor.. that makes sense to me..

Re: Weight
I use all three, and all three tell me I'm fat.
This cycle it was a reality check. The meds had to be administered intramuscular as I was having issues with the Follistim absorbing thru my belly fat. One reason I don't think I'm doing this again anytime soon. If this cycle doesn't work, I need to lose weight before I will try any IF procedures again.
I wll say, that Dr. Brenner NEVER made an issue of my weight, but did ask me if this was the weight I was at when I got pg with my son (which I was).

Re: Weight
I wanted to add that overall I think my biggest issue is age not weight..41 almost 42 outweighs (no pun) being 25 pounds over.
But I will bring up the bellyfat thing to my RE just to see what he says. It will be my research project.

Re: Weight
I am "obese" according to BMI. I lost some weight while going through IF treatments but not a whole lot. I look around and see PG women much heavier than me but I know there is a connection with fertility.
