I say both. Of course it's a dedication, that's why it was put there in the first place, but it's also a distraction for drivers. You can't tell me people won't ever take their eyes off the road to look at it while they drive.

I'm not exactly sure that the side of a road or highway is the safest place for children to be going to mourn. I assume many of these chlidren are buried and have gravesites for mourner's to visit.

Oh, I definitely agree that this is NOT the ideal place to mourn by any means. But every person grieves differently, and I just feel like for some people, they really feel a connection to their loved one at a place like this -- for whatever reason. It certainly can be a distraction, but if it makes someone's life easier to feel like their brother or best friend won't be forgotten -- well, I'd have a hard time saying take it down.

as someone who drives over 50 miles rountrip on 3 parkways everyday, they are a distraction. especially when they're new and large. and after a while they begin to look disgusting which, to me, is disrespectful to the person who was killed there. even in cemeteries they remove items after several weeks so it remains nice and respectful looking.

i don't mind a small cross or other token. but the massive memorials can cause other accidents by people slowing down to look at them.

I honestly don't even notice them that much anymore unless its HUGE. and when I see that, I don't turn around and look, I just drive. I also think to myself, that this could be me one day and I should drive safer.

And when you said that it's just debris after awhile, usually the person's parents or family would up keep with the site. Just like a grave, you throw away the dead flowers, etc.

there is one that stands out. There is one on Middle Country Rd in Centereach. It has been there for years.
I can see it as a dedication, but after a certain amount of time, it should be taken down, because I find myslef always looking at it when I pass and see what new things they put there, so I can see hwere the DISTRACTION comes to play.

every day i drive to work- and pass by a friends house- someone put up a huge display there over a year ago at least... it doesnt look nice from the roadway, and if i were living there I would probably feel like it was a cemetary headstone on my front lawn.Even the image of an empty coffin freaks me out....

I can understand them being up for maybe a week. while they are fresh, and not tattered from all the weather elements. After that let the spirit move on... they are suppose to be going to heaven- not lingering at that spot.

i find them as a reminder to be careful. accidents often take place at bad exits without a lot of room on or off, at a bad turn, a busy intersection. they remind me to slow down or what have you.
