Roadside Memorials: Dediation or Distraction?

I noticed that roadside memorials are being marked with notices that they are going to be removed by a certain date. This got me thinking into this whole issue...

Do you think roadside memorials are a dedication to the person killed or a distraction for drivers on that road?

I also found this article:
link
which states:

Even roadside memorials, for all their emotional importance to those grieving loved ones lost in traffic accidents, can contribute to the litter problem

Thoughts??

Distraction.

Yes, it's meant as a dedication, but it is a distraction to those driving & in a storm, it's debris on the road. They should be removed.

If everyone was as dedicated as those putting down flowers & other mementos, the roads would be filled.

I think there are safer ways to make dedications. Personally, I would not want to be memorialized on the side of a road.

Re: Roadside Memorials: Dediation or Distraction?

dedication. From someone who lost someone from a drunk driving accident... I have put flowers on the pole that that person hit. Your eyes should always be on the road. I don't think a roadside memorial is more distracting then lets say the blow up things stores use to have you notice their store or people who dress up in crazy outfits on the side of the road to have people come in their store.

And I have never seen anything on the road blowing away from a memorial JUST ME THOUGH.

At first there are a dedication (although a distraction) but once the flowers fade and the whole memorial falls apart from the weather (wind, rain, etc...) it become just a distraction and a hazard.

Re: Roadside Memorials: Dediation or Distraction?

My stepdaughter's friend got killed in an accident, and a note went home that they should not set up roadside memorials because they could get hit while setting them up and encourage kids to go there and numb their pain with drugs.... I dunno about that....

But really does anyone think they will be sitting on the side of the road smoking a joint or smoking crack Chat Icon Im sure if they wanted to do drugs they'd go to someones house or the woods or the 500000 other places kids get high

As someone who has lost 2 brothers in 2 seperate accidents I have to say I would never put up a roadside memorial. I have always felt that my time is better spent remembering their life not focusing on thier deaths. JMHO.

Distraction. And I'm not for graffiti being drawn on dividers and such as part of the memorial either.

While I have not lost anyone in an accident (thankfully), I do agree with this sentiment. If you choose to visit and decorate a place, I would decorate the gravesite.

I'm not a huge fan of them purely because they make me sad, but as a high school teacher, I can see their value to the mourners. We've lost too many students to car accidents over the years, and I know how important it is for their friends to have a place like this to go. Honestly, I can see how it WOULD be a distraction, but if it helps people come to terms with tragic losses like these ... well, I wouldn't want to imagine my students' reactions if they suddenly discovered that one of these was taken down.

Wow - I have to say I am surprised to the majority of the reactions....

I feel like I can name all the places that there are memorials on my way to work. They are very sad and sometimes I do pause to pray for that person if I remember the story in the news.
