Martha Stewart's housekeeping book says:
the best way to clean your sponge is to let it airdry everyday, that way bacteria starve. All they do when you microwave it is thrive on the heat, same with dishwashing.
Household bacteria don't thrive on the heat during microwaving. They die. It's too hot to support bacterial life.
To me, I rather go by what Martha says about starving the bacteria by letting the sponge air dry. I would only trust the microwave, unless it were a proven fact for how long is safe to kill any and all kinds of bacteria on a sponge. Some bacteria thrive on high temps, no?
Without food and water, bacteria will die, hence dry the sponge out. Ophelia, you are the next Martha Stewart....she agrees with you!

Re: Microwaving a sponge
I put it in the dishwasher if not i'll just use a new one. I make sure to wring it out after each use and let it air dry. I leave it on a small plate flat not in a sponge holder. I have found this cuts on the smell. I tried nuking it but it smelled bad to me.

A quick Google search found the following articles from Science Daily, which summarizes research papers (I'm sure I could find the links to the actual research papers as well, if you'd prefer):

Re: Microwaving a sponge
Great articles thanks! So it is proven that 4 minutes in the microwave can kill even the hardiest organisms such as spores.
So now I will microwave, THEN let it air dry! That way I can be pretty sure one way or another, my sponge will be bacteria free, yay!
Thanks!

Thanks! Yep, I think that's the best method.
Glad I could help!
