Question about distance from hospital....
Dh and I live about 20 minutes into Nassau County (on the South Shore), and my OBGYN delivers only out of Southside Hospital. I love Southside - most of my family was born there - and I've had only the best experiences there.
My question is, is a 30 minute ride to the hospital too far when going into labor? I've been with my OBGYN for years, and I don't want to give him up. I already tried switching to a few people out here, but didn't have much luck.
Dh and I will be TTCing sometime in the next few months. I want to get this stuff straightened out, if possible, before I become PG.
What are your thoughts about this?

Sounds fine to me. Labor can last for hours/days and you should have plenty of time to get to the hospital after your water breaks.

Re: Question about distance from hospital....
I think thats fine. When I went into labor with my DS I was living in Bellport and we delivered at St. Charles in Port Jeff. It was about a 30 minute drive. We made it there with plenty of time to spare (I was in labor for 18 hours )

Re: Question about distance from hospital....
there was a post about this on pregnancy recently.. it had some good info on it.
Personally, i wouldnt want to be that far. We all know how LI traffic is, and the last thing i want to deal with while being in labor, is a 2 hr trip b/c of rush hour.

Re: Question about distance from hospital....
This is a Great question. I am going to have a similar problem when I become preggo. My friend just had a baby and she lives in Suff and delivered in a Nass Hosp. It was about a 30 min drive and it all turned out fine. So, I say go for it, especially if you love your doctor.

I think that's okay-if you had a true emergency in your pregnancy and you needed to call an ambulance, there is a chance that you would end up at a different hospital though. Just a thought.

I don't think 30 minutes is that bad at all.

Re: Question about distance from hospital....
I think it's a reasonable distance and wouldn't worry too much about it. My aunt had a high risk pregnancy and lived in St. James. She delived at NSUH - and she was fine!

Re: Question about distance from hospital....
I will have almost a 40 minute drive (that's without traffic) and I am pretty comfortable about it. My sister reassured me that it could take a verrry loooong time for that baby to come out. So I'm goin for the 40 minute commute.
