I just read this:
"I have heard that the whole secret of Lost is not what everyone thinks. The island was an experimental land for the nazi's. The electro magnetic field is correct. The big turn though is that the main characters were born on the island. The scientist placed the memories/flashbacks into the characters heads. All the flashbacks are made up, b/c the people have actually been on the island...They staged the plane crash, that is why it was so easy for the people to survive. The producers are throwing everyone for a twist, b/c everyone is focusing on the #'s and the island, when in reality the island is real. The people are an experiment to see how they would act given backgrounds in this type situation. They will find out that they are being messed with, and the scientists will program other memories into their heads. Like Jack actually being a serial killer. Walt being stolen brings back a big problem with Michael, b/c he thinks he lost his son before, and he didn't want to again...It is really simple, and will throw everyone for a big twist."

So no theory, just fact.... interesting!

ETA: Many theories in the same topic... very interesting, but tooooooooo long. I'm getting sleeping reading each post!

OK that just gave me a headache 
But I did hear something on Howawrd Stern (I think) that the rumour about it being a experimental island for nazi's or something similar is totally FALSE
I do happen to think that perhaps the creators THROW OUT the false 'spoilers" or rumours just to really screw with us
