Coming off the pill

I've been on the pill for about 15 years. I need it to regulate AF. DH and I talked about when we want to start TTC and we are thinking sometime in November. I want to be off the pill for 3 months before we get preggo. I am going to consult with my doctor, but is there anything I should know when coming off the pill? Especially because I'm on it for regulation?

Re: Coming off the pill

I had no problems so far. I came off the pill after my AF in April. I got my AF back within 27 days & now it is over & we are ready to TTC! I was originally going to come off 3 months prior too but my OBGYN said it was not necessary.

I would just be prepared to not be too normal at first. You might not get your first AF for 30 days or so like some others have said on this board.

It depends on what you mean by regulation. Do you mean that without it your cycles were all over the place, or that you never got you . at all??

In general I think coming off in advance and spending time figuring out your cycle is a very good idea. I would read Taking Charge of Your Fertility and starting to chart your cycle during those first three months. Lots of women have unfortunately found out that the pill was masking a problem.

Exactly what I was going to say... I went on the pill years ago for "regulation" and now off the pill I am still irregular and probably have PCOS. I would go to your OB/GYN and discuss TTC, and articulate your concerns.

Re: Coming off the pill

I definitely recommend going off the pill a little earlier than you are planning to TTC. I went on the pill about 8 or 9 years ago and came off it in December. My periods have been pretty irregular since then - anywhere from about 35 days to 50 days. This is the first month it's been sorta back to normal - 30 days! A lot of girls on here say that it takes at least a few months for their cycle to get back to "normal." And if you go off the pill sooner and you find that your periods really don't regulate, you can go to your doctor sooner to discuss it and see if there are any problems you should know about. Good luck!!!

I agree.....I came off the pill April 2006 and I'm still TTC. I wish I would have came off sooner and learned how my body works by charting. Charting can help you avoid pregnancy as well raise a red flag for potential problems. And then when you are ready to start TTC then charting can help you figure out when you are ovulating. Highly recommend reading Taking Charge of Your Fertility

Re: Coming off the pill

Sorry for busting in here, but I have to share with you my personal experience coming off the pill.

In November 2002, My OB suggested I go off the pill when I mentioned to him that DH and I wanted to have a baby "within the next year". He said that I should have 6 months of "regular" cycles, begin taking pre-natals, and start charting so that I could figure out how my body worked. I had been on the pill for about 6 years at this point, and wanted to start TTC about 6 months from this appointment.

I took my last BCP on December 16, 2002. Got AF for my normal 4 days. When I did not get my period in January, I called my doctor who told me "its normal... call me if you do not get it in February" (I took ONE test @ home and it was negative). Well, February rolled around, no AF... called, made an appointment, and was told that I was 9 weeks pregnant. My son was born in Sept. 2003.

It happens. So if you want to wait, I suggest using a back-up method.

Good luck and healthy happy baby-dust to you!

well for me, regulation means that I would get my period so sporadically. I would get it for 2 weeks straight really heavy, then stop for a week, then get it again for a week, then off again...and so on. This was a problem for me because I was a swimmer in high school and I was in the pool everyday. Plus, the cramps were out of control! Now that I am on the pill, I still get my period for 7-10 days. I talked to my doctor about it and I have to go in for a sonohystogram just to make sure I dont have any polyps or anything
