I would get the 4X4. I believe that the resale value on a 4X4 is greater than on a 4X2, too.

People do what they can afford to do. $50 has to come from somewhere and if you are on a budget, you weigh your needs and plan accordingly. We also did plan for the future considering what our needs would be for a family when the time comes.
The 2007 CR-V is on the same chassis as the Accord. So essentially, it rides lower with a lower center of gravity more like a small station wagon than a typical SUV. The tire is no longer on the back thus reducing the length of the car and now that it is actually IN the car, it contributes to that same center of gravity. We checked this out and it was a selling point with us.
We are not that far removed from the mini-van generation that replaced station wagons, but I dont see myself driving one. It isnt my style. Having grown up on the north shore of LI with parents owning at least 3 station wagons (to my recollection) in my lifetime, I can truly say that we were never paralyzed during snowstorms and we never had 4 wheel drive. I got to school and my father got to work.
Again, people do what they can do. It isnt always as easy as it costs only a "little bit more." There are more factors to consider.

I had ONE 4x2 truck & never again. It was awful in the rain & completely useless in the snow. The gas milage & $ saved was not worth it in the end. It used to fishtail all over the place, no matter how carefully I drove it.
All my other trucks have been 4wd since then.
DH's cousin had the same problem with his 4x2 truck.
My small CR-V is AWD and I love it! 
I will never buy another car without it again.

As far as gas mileage, we get great mileage on the CR-V. Of course, on that vehicle, it's 2wd and only shifts into 4wd (automatically) when necessary.

The newer 4x4 technology is much more gas friendly than even last year. Definitely look at all of the specs when shopping for a car. My pick up only gets 8 MPG, but the 4x4 nitro & patriot get well over 20 MPG average. I think (and I could be wrong) that the 4x2 models only got 2 MPG more on average.

The station wagons from back in day probably weighed double of what the cars/small suvs weigh now. In fact, most older cars did ok in snow because they were heavier.
I don't no where you grew up on the N. Shore, but here in Centerport/Northport/Huntington, I see a lot of stranded cars on the side of the road or at the bottom of driveways.
As for the OP's original question, given the option and if it I could fit it into my budget, I would get a 4x4 or all-wheel drive.

I would go with the 4x4.
I used to have the jeep liberty (which I had to put into 4-wheel if I needed it) and about 3 yrs ago on the way home from work on the meadowbrook pkwy it was starting to snow and I didn't put the 4-wheel drive on yet... well I ended up crashing into the divider.
I have a jeep grand cherokee now and it will automatically jump into 4-wheel drive when it needs to.
IMO if you're going to get an SUV, get the 4x4.

LOL they use a differnet engine for the cherokee & commander. The P/up I have is a Dodge. They definitely have more efficient options available.

I get between 20 and 22 (highway) with my ML350 and I was told I would get less b/c it's all wheel drive
I get about 18 around town
The excursion I get- b/c I rented Aspen- I am was happy when I saw 14 mpg highway- that thing was HUGE!

4x2 is a waste IMHO
4x4 is the way to go, when it snows or rains and floods the expressway...other cars will get stuck while I drive right through. If you want to drive on the beach, 4X4. If you are moving and need to tow the uhaul along with you, a 4X2 or sedan will struggle while the 4X4 chugs along and you don't even notice you are towing anything.
