4x2 or 4x4?
I am looking in getting a small size SUV.
I was always told to get a 4x4 if I wanted an SUV.
The question is:
Is the price difference between a 4x2 and 4x4 really worse it?
For those who have 4x4 vs 4x2 and vice versa,
what made you decide for each? Did you need the 4x4? Any "regrets"?

Re: 4x2 or 4x4?
We decide not to get the 4x4 when we got our SUV. They did not have the car in the color we wanted in the 4x4 in stock and we didn't want to wait.
The dealer said we would never have a use for the 4x4 feature on Long Island and I think he was right. It was a feature we just didn't need.

Re: 4x2 or 4x4?
I have a 2 wheel drive 2007 CR-V. Before that, I managed to get around LI just fine in mid-sized sedans without 4 wheel drive for almost 20 years. LI is flat. The car was considerably cheaper than its 4WD counterpart and I know I would never use the feature.

Re: 4x2 or 4x4?
We will always have 2 vehicles that are 4x4 or all-wheel drive.
Where I live, a 2 wheel drive vehicle is useless. When we owned a 2 wheel drive vehicle, it never performed during snow storms. I've had to leave it in a parking lots because I couldn't make it up the "hills" of the North Shore.
Even in rainy weather, our all-wheel drive vehicle makes the difference. The only way we would purchase a vehicle that wasn't a 4x4 or all-wheel is if it was a 3rd vehicle.

Re: 4x2 or 4x4?
I see no point of getting a 4x2 SUV
I have always had 4x4 or all wheel drive-I currently have all wheel drive and my car handles very well- even with all the ice storms

They don't. It's RARE says DH (the dealer!). Most of the times, they are used vehicles taken in on trade (FL is big in 2x4 SUV's for obvious reasons).
That said, 4x4 all the way. Especially in an SUV.

Re: 4x2 or 4x4?
We have a 4x4 sportage - I used the 4wd feature twice. It is better to have it then not to have it - thats how I see it.
My father in law bought the 4X2 sportage and he likes his.
Its all up to you....If you think you may use it then get it....Or if you think it is better to have it just in case, then get it.

I guess I was one of the rare ones. My car was brand new. Frankly. I was tired of driving a sedan. I wanted something different looking and we bought what we could afford.

Re: 4x2 or 4x4?
I had ONE 4x2 truck & never again. It was awful in the rain & completely useless in the snow. The gas milage & $ saved was not worth it in the end. It used to fishtail all over the place, no matter how carefully I drove it.
All my other trucks have been 4wd since then.

Re: 4x2 or 4x4?
We have a 4 x 4 but our car is rear wheel drive - read that as USELESS in the snow/ice. We needed the 4 x 4 - even just to get out of the parking lot with a few inches of ice this year. I nearly ruined the transmission in the car trying to get over a tiny hill of ice with the rear wheel drive.

Re: 4x2 or 4x4?
4x4s get worse gas mileage, are more prone to expensive repairs and cost more to maintain. I have a 4x4 pickup, but I've been on the beach with it, and I do stuff with the truck that I really need the 4x4. It's a true part-time 4 wheel drive, which means I have to manually switch it into 4x4, and I can't leave it in 4 wheel drive mode. All-wheel drive is good because the car is always giving power to all 4 wheels, just in different proportions depending on driving conditions. For most people, I would tell them that unless they are intentionally going off-road or doing construction, the manually shifted 4 wheel drive may not be worth it. If the snow is that bad, just stay home.

Re: 4x2 or 4x4?
in the total 8 years i have own an SUV between 2 cars, i used 4x4 say, 5 times..i would use the savings and get a 4x2. My cars are both 4x2 and switch anytime on the fly to 4x4. We never use it. It may depend on your area, say you live on north shore very hilly spots say Huntingtons, and Port Jeffs, it would help but 4x4 also presents a chance you will still get stuck if thats the your reasoning behind a 4x4. And even today with i see a reaible gas station (self server) hitting 3.20...big trucks aren't worth it these days. This year we git rid of 1 and the other comes off lease in 1.5 years...

We have one 4 wheel drive that we usually share ir when there are big snows here in the hills of the North Shore!

ETA: I've had my Jeep for six years, almost 100K miles and never had any costly repairs related to the vehicle being 4x4.

IMO, if you're getting an SUV and you live in a climate like NY, you might as well go for the 4x4. my sister had a Tahoe but since she lives in CA where it never snows, she got the 4x2.

We have a 2007 4wd CR-V. I'd rather pay the $2,000 and have the 4wd in the event I need it one day than not pay that and regret it one day. It only takes one accident. JMHO.
The price difference for 4wd is, IMHO, pretty small. We're talking $50/mo.

We LOVE it. Nice to drive and I think a great price, too. We also have a Civic -- has almost 110,000 miles (and only 5 years old!) on it and still going strong. Love the Hondas!!

My thoughts are why get an SUV if you dont want 4x4...that is the point of an SUV, in my opinion. If you want a 4x2, you can save money by just getting a car...just my 2 cents...

I need the "style" for practicality. I have 2 dogs and a baby on the way. So, I have to fit a stroller also with the dog crate.

IMO, worth it! especially w/a baby on the way. if nothing else, it's peace of mind.
