Got a call for a teaching job...
I just got a call for a position....a First grade class, with FIVE students, salary is $19k (Christian school). That's not a teaching job, that's babysiting!! SAD!!

IMO 5 first graders is more than enough  (I couldn't teach primary).
Congrats on getting a call - hoping that this is the beginning of lots of calls!

wow.
even if the class is small- 19K?
i for one wouldn't want to send my kids to a school where the teachers were only paid 19k- that is ridiculous.

That is what I got paid for my first year teaching in a private school. It only went up to 21K before I left 2 years later.
It is really sad. Teaching is one of the most important professions out there --- yet we aren't compensated.
I hope something good comes along your way soon. Have you tried NYC? I work there now, and it isn't IDEAL, but it at least pays enough for survival!
