Need ideas for a new Apartment Housewarming Party....

My SIL is planning of moving out of her parents house and plans on registering for the things she needs--which is everything.

We thought of throwing her a party kinda like a "bridal shower" and in a restaurant (because her apartment won't be big enough for everyone).

Has anyone had/been to any gathering like this? Please share your suggestions. Would especially need help with suggestions for invitation wording and possible favor.

Thanks in advanceChat Icon

I don't think I like the sound of this to be honest. I don't think it will go over well with those invited. Registering for moving out? I mean.. Most people buy stuff themselves. Or Craigslist. Or take donations from friends.

I mean, maybe some people give gifts (plants, wine glasses are some things I got for my first apt) but I sure didn't register. I wouldn't think too. If you have to do that in order to furnish your place, you should wait a bit.

I know you didn't ask, my just giving my two cents on what I would think if getting an invite to something like this (and you asked if anyone had been to one)

Who is paying for the guests at the restaurant?

Honestly I would maaaaybe have a nice little brunch with close close friends and no expectations of gifts. I wouldn't register. If someone gives a gift, awesome. But I wouldn't register.

I would do an open house type of party at her new apartment. People will come and go and most will probably bring some sort of gift. I wouldn't register though.

Agreed. An apartment warming party sounds a lot better than let's go out to dinner and please buy me these exact gifts. I guess she could register, but I wouldn't mention it unless someone asked- which I doubt they will- though they might ask you what she needs. I'd use that registry more of like a list for my own personal reference of what do I need.

Honestly, I would not throw a "bridal shower" like party for someone who decides to get their own apartment. As a pp stated most people set up their own apartment and registering is NOT typical. I have never been invited to a party like this and personally would see it as someone asking for gifts- An open house or house warming party is usually close friends and maybe a few family members- my go to gifts for house warming are usually a gift card to Home Depot or a bottle of wine/champagne.

Agreed. We had a house warming this wknd and most friends brought us wine/alcohol or small gifts (which were awesome BTW) but I wouldn't expect them to give me a toaster or vacuum or anything.

Yeah, I like the idea on an open house at the apartment. But I wouldn't do a party at a restaurant. Then what would she have at her actual bridal shower one day?

I think it's sweet that you want to help her. I wouldn't, however, throw this type of party. I am all about celebrations, and I honestly think my feathers would be ruffled if I received an invite to this type of party.

Maybe she can have a couple of gatherings at her apartment if everyone won't fit for a party...one with family....one with friends...one with coworkers...

I also am not into the idea of registering for this situation.

I'm gonna give a hard no on the restaurant-type housewarming party. It's weird. Any housewarming party I have ever been to is at the home, as an open house type party, and people generally bring small gifts, alcohol, etc. I have never seen someone register for a housewarming.

I agree. I love a good party but this doesn't sound like a good idea and I think most guests would find it tacky. Expecting people to buy everything needed for her to live on her own is a bit strange. I see nothing wrong with a typical open house type of party though. People can come and go as they please and most will bring a small gift.

I also agree. I guess it is ok if she wants to register but I would not advertise it. I would only tell someone about it if they specifically ask "what does she need?".
