We moved to our new home 2 weeks ago and Monday I started my new commute to my office in Jamaica and I've already been delayed twice for people being hit by the LIRR!

Literally my first day commuting I was delayed over an hour getting home and today I showed up in my office 3 hours late.

Not going to lie, it happens a lot.
If it's not that, it's a derailment. Car fire on the tracks.
Last night we had a medical emergency on the train and had to be held at Jamaica for bit until EMS got there.

But then again, driving to work is not much better with the way traffic is in NY

You can't win!

UGH, I knew things would be annoying and that the LIRR certainly has its share of problems, but I really wasn't expecting it to be an everyday thing.

It can be. THere are bad weeks and then you will go weeks with no issues. It has been a bad summer and IMO the summer is actually worse than the winter.

Best advice - just have back up plans. I made train friends and we work together to get to another station/line. Today we had one person's son drive us to Massapequa so it wasn't horrible. Its all part of public transportation.

Don't forget the signal issues. One tunnel being out. So fun.

Also my favorite was the last minute track changes and people running frantically.

Good luck.

Also because you bought a new home be VERY AWARE OR SCAM EMAIL THAT LOOKS LEGIT.

there are a lot of scam services that will send you "star exemption" and other papers that look like they came from the state/county.

Look at everything you get. If it looks official it probably is not.

I find this too with summer vs winter. You'd think it was the opposite!

Please tell me this is not the norm!!!!

I switched to LIRR from the express bus because the traffic was just insane. Two hours to get home at night. Now it is just one hour door to door. Bus is my backup for the Pt Washington line.

Re: Please tell me this is not the norm!!!!

The LIRR delays is a huge reason why DH and I decided not to move out to LI.

I feel like my coworkers who take it have delays at least once a week! Definitely take the time to map out some alternate routes.

This summer was particularly bad. It also depends on what train line you're on. In the 1 year I commuted into the city for my last job, I was only majorly delayed once. So it's not always bad.

Port Washington branch is so much better than the other branches though.

Thank you for the heads up! I remember seeing a post about the "star exemption" and already warned my husband not to fill out anything!

Don't forget these, I'm sure there are more!
Smoke in the tunnels
Slip/slide from leaves on the tracks
Signal problems
Equipment problems
Being held for a late train in the other direction
Police action

I know I'm going to get jumped on, but your post is extremely insensitive. 2 people have died (or were injured) and you're worried that you're late to work?

You are absolutely correct and believe me I was not trying to be insensitive. This is obviously a first world problem post and I didn't mean to offend anyone.

She was 3 hours late. My manager didn't give a crap who was hit by what. Everytime I was late because of the crap LIRR my boss was pissed at me for the whole day. The LIRR really sucks.

Also, my train today had to be taken out of service because it was literally falling apart as it chugged along. I kid you not, parts of the train were dismantling. They had to evacuate cars because "something might be burning." Something MIGHT be BURNING.

This is why we won't buy a house that's not along the pt Washington line. Too many horror stories and people complaining on fb every other day about being delayed. Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: Please tell me this is not the norm!!!!

My dh just had a fantastic offer made to him but its in the city. He did that commute for 9 years and the thought of doing it again really isn't worth extra money. It was always something. We use to laugh when the LIRR put out there month arrival on time % rates because it was such a joke. It was always something, signal problems, something on the tracks, fire on the tracks, weather issues.

This is what kills me. They can't control jumpers, assholes who go around gates and drive on the tracks, etc
But for what they charge to ride those rickety old crates, you would think the infrastructure and the trains themselves would be better
The trains are falling apart, and filthy.
The tracks are a mess- hence the constant derailments.
I pay $36.50 peak round trip to get into the city and back.
That's a lot for such an outdated, dilapidated system.
I just feel like there is a lot of corruption.

It happened twice in the matter of 1 week. It does not happen that often. But it will happen. In the City, on LI, in NJ, etc... You will get delays on LIRR, maybe 10 minutes. It's not every week. But people hit, delays because of signal problem, snow, wind/bad weather, canceled trains in an on and off deal. It is still much more reliable vs a car. Some lines are better than others on LI. We ended staying and not moving out of our house because DH takes the train where 3 lines go through. It helps! 10-15 minutes delay will be common.
