Road Rage

I swear, it's getting out of control.

This morning I was driving to work on the service road of the LIE and the traffic was awful. No real reason that I saw, just a ton more volume than normal. Maybe the LIE itself was backed up so more people got on the service road, who knows.
It was just a frustrating commute and maybe that contributed to this.

Anyway, the guy in front of me in this bumper to bumper mess was in a nice, shiny brand new Infiniti.
At some point, he ended up in the lane next to me, and it seemed he was going to get on the actual LIE at an entrance ramp. Well the woman in the lane next to him, opened her window and gave him the finger out the window. I noticed it as she was now right in front of me. I guess maybe he was tailgating her, or whatever, who knows, I didn't see.

Well he slammed on his brakes, and instead of getting on the LIE at the entrance ramp, he got back in the lane and started swerving his car into her lane as if he was trying to hit her. He then got behind her and started riding on her bumper really bad. Then back next to her and SWERVING his brand new car as if to hit her.
Like he literally decided to not get on the highway and go out of his way to try and scare her or scream at her or whatever.

I swear to you people are EFFING NUTS.
You really need to think twice before flipping someone off like that.
Crazy town out there!

Driving on Long Island has really gotten to a bad point.

Yeah, people here are crazy drivers! Once, we were turning right but DH slammed on his breaks b/c there was a person in the middle of the crosswalk. There was a guy coming from the other direction - about to make a left into the lane we were in and had to slam on his breaks to avoid hitting us. He laid on the horn the *entire* time it took for the lady to cross the street. Once we turned, the guy pulled into the bike lane next to us (not a lane for cars - just extra space where bikes would be) and flipped us the bird and imitated like he was going to ram into our car. DH slowed down so the guy would drive past us and the arsehole pulled in front of us and then every 10 feet would slam on his breaks trying to get us to crash into him. Finally, thankfully, we got to our turn and got away from him.

But then once, when we drive up an extra lane to get into the turning lane *we're* the ones getting pulled over by a cop. Why is there never a cop around when these arseholes are trying to cause an accident?

So many times I want to flip someone off, but I always do it where the person can't see. There's no way I'm getting into a confrontation with these crazy people!

It's not people with grand egos. It's people with tiny egos, poor self esteem, who have to derive their self worth by beating someone onto a ramp or cutting someone off or having the last word--because their lives and self esteem are so pathetic.

People who feel one-upped and vengeful by something that a secure person wouldn't think twice about. Fragile , sad, pathetic people--who probably take lives because of their rage and insecurity.

It terrifies that they're out there with normal people every day.

We got into an accident with our infant dd in the car a few weeks ago. It's a good thing I was so hysterical because I wanted have killed the guy with my bare hands.

I am actually fearful to drive with dd and I am not a nervous driver. Never, ever have I seen the caliber of idiocy that I have seen on LI. Never. Not anywhere. It's a big part of why I hate living here so much. DH always says "when we move....." and I have to remind him that we may not make it out alive before then. No one can drive. Though, no one can take the train like anything but a savage, either. Modes of transportation just aren't a strong point on LI, huh?

See I was wondering about this. I always say that everyone on Long Island drives like a dickk. But I really don't drive outside of Long Island much so I was wondering do people drive like this everywhere? Or is it unique to Long Island?

I was already a "cautious" driver...but since having my DS...I'm petrified of this Chat Icon These people are all selfish a$$holes. God forbid they take their time. God forbid they wait to send that effing text message. I swear, it won't matter how hysterical I am...if someone hits me with my child in the car...I think a whole new side of me is going to come out.

I moved here 2 years ago from Durham, NC and yeah, it's definitely bad here. I've never been run off the road, honked at, or been chased by road ragers as much as I've been here.

I've been run off the road here to the point that they made me drive up on a curb and caused my tire to pop. I try to avoid Old Country Road around Roosevelt Mall now as much as possible.

ETA: I was also in an accident within 6 months of moving here. I was in a lane and someone decided they wanted to be in my lane, too. Swiped the entire right side of my van! I pulled over and they took off (police never found them even though I had the license plate #).

Yes it is crazy!! I remember one time when I was in my early 20's I was driving off a highway ramp and I guess must have cut this truck off. We were stuck at a red light and all of a sudden I see this guy coming out of his truck .... I was scared he was going to pull out a gun and shoot me or something. He just proceeded to yell/curse at me.

I agree, the road rage is out of control.

But seriously, driving ANYWHERE on this island is absolute torture, road rage or not. It is so freaking aggravating to have so much traffic, you literally can't get anything done because it takes forever.

Ugh god people suck. This is why i go into work for 6:30 am. Not that there aren't jerks on the roads then, because at that hour everyone is in a rush- you just aren't dealing with the mass amounts. I seriously wish I could work remotely from my bed.

I was once driving to work and I witnessed a guy flip this other guy the finger...thought nothing of it, until they started playing bumper chicken and then pulled over and started fist fighting...It's crazy how some people can't control their emotions while driving. I wouldn't suggest giving a jerk the finger while driving...dangerous things can occur as you witnessed...

Re: Road Rage

Luckily, I don't have to deal with road rage here. You will get fined if you give the finger or call someone an a$$hole. And it will happens here.

But man, the lack of blinkers and the horn honking at green lights is more than in NY. Plus our lights go red and you wait. Then they turn yellow to make sure everyone has time to get into first gear then green, so you have extra time. If your car isn't rolling by the second or a few seconds after it turns green, then there is a horn. It makes me anxious.

Sometimes I much prefer NY drivers to drivers here.

At 5pm on a weekday, I'd take midtown over the LIE. Seriously. I grew up in Queens, which you wouldn't think is so different but I have seen more accidents in my 2 years on LI than I had in my 29 years in Queens.

It's a mentality thing, not just a driving thing. I find people on LI to be rude and inconsiderate everywhere- on the road and on the LIRR is definitely the worst, but people are d!cks in the supermarket, restaurants. I used to have to drive to Queens to get the bus to the city when I was pregnant because I couldn't get a seat on the LIRR. Multiple people on the bus would offer and then ask when I was due, how I was feeling. Men would let me on before them (even when I wasn't pregnant). No one on the LIRR would budge, and these are the people I live around since there's only 3 stops on the train I'd take.

It's disgusting and we will be moving before dd starts kindergarten because I refuse to let her grow up in this environment.

It's really bad out here... And I'm sure a lot has to do with the volume of cars on the roads... You are in traffic everywhere you go... I think that really wears on people... The whole horn honking when the light turns green though... That bugs me. A lot of times, it's people texting that don't notice the light turned green so yes, if that's you, you deserve to be honked at Chat Icon but getting back to the road rage, I've had people give me dirty looks for stopping for a school bus and actually driving the speed limit though the school zone... Like IM the one doing something wrong... Blows my mind! I'm ready to leave this island... Hardly ever do I run into someone nice... Everyone has a puss on their face. Because this damn island rapes you of every last dime that you have and you are sitting in traffic to make that dime everyday... Adios LI... I'm ready for some southern livin!

It's funny, because my worst road rage experience happened when we were on a road trip...I think we were in Virginia or NC. But the driver of a tractor trailer was flashing his brights and giving us the finger for no reason. We were sitting in traffic, so it wasn't even like we could move anywhere. We're thinking it might've been our NY plates.

I agree with this. I find myself very depressed living here.
It's freezing into May. Like the first few weeks of May I was in winter clothes. We get like 3 months of nice then a LONG LONG brutal winter.

It's way over crowded. They build on every spare piece of land and there are way too many cars for the old road to handle. Traffic is ridiculous.

The infrastructure is old and ugly.
Everything is brown and grey and old and depressing.
When I step off the plane in Florida it's like a veil lifts off of my mood. When I land back in NY it's like I'm depressed and angry again.

It's really sad that we pay some of the highest taxes in the nation to live in the worst part of the nation.

Re: Road Rage

Road rage is horrible here and sometimes you just absorb it. I feel like I've been cursing under my breath a lot more than usual but I don't think I'd ever give someone a finger or something bc I am too scared of what the hell they could be carrying or whatever.

Re: Road Rage

I agree its really bad but it seems to be worse during summer/warmer months. I attribute to young guys who have too much testosterone and have to show off their new Mustangs by driving at 90 MPH. It seems drivers are soo antsy to get to places around this time of year (graduations, end of year school events, parties, etc) and the erratic driving is at its height. Once school is out, traffic gets lighter until September/October when the craziness starts all over again.
