The mother/parents failed to prevent their kid from toppling into a dangerous enclosure. I don't think anyone is refuting that. Am I wrong? Anyone want to let the mom off the hook 100%?
What is being said is that no one is perfect, we as parents will fail and we can ony hope that when we do our children will survive, recover, be whole again. And those of you who think you are infallible, well you just haven't been a parent long enough to learn this (whether your kid is 2 or 18, we all find this out eventually).
Seriously! No one is saying this was an example of GOOD parenting!! But instead of questioning her entire existence as a mother, maybe people could try and have some compassion? It absolutely COULD happen to anyone.

I usually leave one of mine at home with my husband for their safely and my sanity.
Hence the reason why some of us spaced our kids as we knew it wouldn't be a walk in the park and knew how much we would be able to handle things. I am sure all 4 of this woman's kids are very young. I don't know about her but the husband is a convicted felon.
OMG you are seriously insane. What if she was 40 when she had her first and had to move fast if she wanted another? What if her birth control failed and she didn't want to have an abortion? You are so seriously judgmental it never ceases to amaze me!
She has 4 kids and 32

Except mom WAS paying attention to one of her children as she was buckling that child into it's stroller, and since dad had to be restrained from climbing into the gorilla enclosure as well, he was clearly also paying attention. You can pretend you're perfect all you want, your words on here paint an ugly picture of who you actually are.

Oh I get that but like others have said on this thread, you can avoid many situations when you are extremely attentive to what your children are doing out in public and even at home. I would never say that nothing can happen right in front of your eyes. Any fool would know that. Many, many things can be avoided though.

No one is a perfect parent but people need to acknowledge when they are at fault. Of course this was an accident but the mother should have been watching her child and that is a fact. You can make every excuse in the book on why she was not watching and I'm sure she did not mean for it to happen but it did and it was avoidable. The child did not slip into the cage, he climbed into it. Even if it is an accident, own up to it on the part of the parents and the part of zoo for not making sure the enclosure was completely sealed.

Wow 8 pages!!! I wish I was able to write a whole essay to those moms who have angels as kids, and have more than perfect parenting skills but unfortunately I can't get my eyes away from my kids, who by they live in a bubble 24/7, well u know...I'm a perfect parent

I don't know anyone here IRL, but to the extent that ANYONE really thinks that this is black and white and they are good, and this or a similar tragedy could never happen to them... (not sure who this applies to)--
I always feel sorry for kids whose parents are sanctimonious and unforgiving.
Imagine life where you're either "good" or "bad" based on partial information and/or a snapshot. No mitigating circumstances? No, "we've all been there." No "could have happened to any of us." Just judgment and ruefulness.
Imagine being parented by someone so unyielding and with such a high opinion of themselves that they feel infallible?
That's the irony of this thread.

I agree and I do think that she should be held responsible to some degree. And the father if he was with her. It's like other people have said, you can be driving dangerously and nothing happens, you're off the hook. But if something horrible happens you will be responsible. But I think that this kind of mistake can happen to a LOT of parents. Maybe not Blessedmama because she is blessed with perfect parenting skills, unlike most of us.

Seriously none of us ever said we were perfect. We DID say we were overly cautious parents and always kept an eye on our kids. Did my kids in particular do things out of my site? Of course and anyone would be a fool to think that kids don't get into trouble in 2 seconds. You can't control everything but some can be more attentive and not expect their kids not to get into things and expect others to watch their kids. A village is people helping others in need, not because the person has decided to take less responsibility for whatever reason they choose. Things happen but it seems there is a lot more distractive parenting in this day and age of cellphones.

I wasnt going to weigh in but...
1. The parents probably could have kept a closer eye on their kids but sometimes stuff happens. It doesnt mean you are a terrible parent. Some people I consider some of the better parents I know have had situations where something really unexpected happened. Even if they took their eyes off him for a second it doesnt mean they are terrible parents and should have their kids taken away. This moment will haunt them the rest of their lives.
2. Without knowing the specific details of the enclosure, based on what I have read and seen about it I think that the Zoo was potentially negligent. Parents should be watching their kids but IMO there should be no way for a child to get in to an exhibit like this.
3. I am an animal lover but at the end of the day, the child's life trumps the animal's life, and I think the Zoo did what it needed to do. It's extremely unfortunate and I am really upset that it had to happen because it was entirely preventable, but even if the parent was 1000% wrong and threw her kid into the exhibit it's still not a reason to let the kid potentially die at the hands of the gorilla.
4. It's between the Zoo and the family and their lawyers whether either side should seek legal action against the other for whatever reason -- the enclosure, the supervision, etc. But at the end of the day, while the Zoo (with respect to the enclosure) and the parents (with respect to supervision) could have both been wrong, the decision of whether to save the child is still black and white to me...
A more interesting question would be if an adult knowingly jumped into the enclosure and started a fight with the gorilla, would you still save the adult at the expense of the animal? I think thats an interesting ethics discussion... but, this was a child here

No, that does not mean he was paying attention, it just means that after the kid fell, he ran over and was willing to go and get him.
Like I said, you are painting a truly horrific picture of who you are as a person. If you really do have children, I feel badly that they should grow up in the kind of environment your kind of narrow-minded judgment provides.
I am actually very open minded and know all types of people so that is why I post what I do. I am aware of what is out there and I know many many good parents as well as ok parents and bad parents too. People who do not spend time with others who are different from themselves are narrow-minded. Open mindedness comes from age and experience.
It's kinda interesting how age is being brought up here. I recognize a lot of posters on this thread from years ago which (I'd be assuming) makes them, for the most part, not doe-eyed 20-somethings. Just wondering what age brings the experience and open mindedness? 35? 40? 50? I'm almost 33 - am I close?
Re:gorilla/zoo vs. mom/kid: my first thought was how sad for the gorilla and how scary for the mom and kid. Everyone failed here. I think everyine involved is to blame in some way but it's not my job nor my business to decide that. My job is to supervise my children and keep them away from danger. I try to be on top of my kids - especially out in public - and anticipate potential dangers but there is just no way to be on them 100% of the time. And to those who say they are *YAY* here's your medal!
