when someone hands you an unexpected gift

do you open it right away?

For people I know, I do. But for patients that hand me gifts, I just say thank you and leave it on my desk. I feel it's rude, but Im also VERY shy. Is it that bad that I dont open it right away? (usually something edible but sometimes its jewelry or make up)

wen someone hands you an unexpected gift

I NEVER open up my gifts in front of people unless it's from my parents or husband. I simply thank them and set it aside. I prefer to give rather than receive so I feel awkward. My husband on the hand will rip the envelope or bag right in front of everyone.. To me it seems greedy. But I'm just weird like that I guess...

I would do the same as you. Say thank you and leave it on my desk. Unless they say, 'open it'. Then I prob would.

I feel disrespectful NOT opening it but its awkward. I once received a knitting kit and every single time the patient comes in she asks me if I started a project yet. and my answer is always NO. Chat Icon

I usually ask them if they'd like me to open it.

It depends upon the circumstances. Sometimes I put it aside and other times I open it.

Hrm. I read the person's reaction really.. and if I feel the right type of glee I ask "Should I open it?" and based on the "You can" I say either "Oh I think I'll keep it for a end of day surprise" or I open it

If I feel it's just a small thing I say nothing about opening it and just thank them.

Re: when someone hands you an unexpected gift

I usually thank them and open it later. DH's family would always put me on the spot and act like I'm weird for not opening it. So now I open their gifts right away. I just always feel awkward about it.

At my job I always set it aside unless the customer insists I open it.

Re: when someone hands you an unexpected gift

I think part of the fun of giving someone a gift is seeing their reaction when they open it. I tend to put lots of thought into gifts I give, so if it's not opener in front of me, I feel bad. I also always open gifts in front of people. I honestly always feel like it's awkward/rude not to! Chat Icon
