When someone gets you an "unexpected" holiday gift...
Hey girlies! I haven't been on this board in forever, but I have a question and hope everyone is doing well! :) So I have a yoga friend/teacher who I was sort of a mentor to and last year, she got me a gift (took me by surprise). It was so sweet and I ended up getting her a little something in exchange. So this year, you'd think I'd be prepared that she was going to get me something, but since I'm due in like 6 days, I totally spaced on it. When she said she had something for me, I completely thought she meant something for the baby--but no, it was a gift for me. She's not the type who buys something to get something back, but of course I feel like crap about it and I went out and bought her a lovely sweater from Ann Taylor. I just emailed her that I had a little something for her, and if I didn't see her this week then when we have the baby I'd love for her to come over and meet her, etc. My mom says it's obvi I didn't have a gift for her and I should have left it alone. But--on the flipside, if you get the person nothing, then you feel bad! Was it tacky of me to buy something? I mean, I'm sure she picked up on this...

I don't think it was tacky. I think it was sweet of you to return the thought.

It is obvious that you went out and got her somethng, but we have all been in that position and have done the same exact thing. Its NOT tacky.

Yeah, it is obvious! LOL! But I couldn't let the gesture go. And it was so sweet; she got me a top from J Crew not "quite" in my old size but a good size, as she knows I'm anxious to get back into shape and she thought it was something I would love.

I think it's sweet too. I mean, it is obvious that you hadn't planned to get her a gift, but I am sure she will appreciate that you took the time (6 days before your due date!) to find something you thought she would like to give to her, when you didn't have to do that and she likely wasn't expecting you to.

I wouldn't think twice about it as the receiver. Even if it's "obvious" you went out and bought something after the fact, it wouldn't bothered me. The fact that you went out of your way and got me something at all would be enough.

i agree! plus, your days away from having a baby... if i thought ANYTHING of it, i would just think that you were busy preparing for the baby and didn't have a chance to get me something until then. don't worry about it! she'll love it no matter what!

I think it's sweet. And, if anything, you can say that you have "prego brain" or something along those lines and forgot to give it to her. She sounds like a sweet and understanding person!
